Shoaib Akhtar singing
By Will 4 days ago, in the wee hours, No Comments; be the first!
I really miss old Akhers. Guaranteed entertainment with the ball, but a fascinating character: no one knew whether he’d be fit, or indeed where the ball would go if he was fit. No one knew what he’d do off the pitch either. He was a wonderful shambles.
Question: what’s better than watching Shoaib Akhtar trying to sing on Youtube?
Answer: the comments left by his fans on Youtube.

By Will last year, at the start of July, No Comments; be the first!
Youtube is extraordinary. Here’s a really clear example of the passion that cricket instils in parts of south Asia, but also the chaotic frenzy it generates. The girl picking up the makeshift stumps, the toddler zooming down the wicket in his trike, the constant shouting, the lack of order and form. Complete madness, yet (and I’m assuming it’s Pakistan, correct me if I’m wrong) guess which country produces the most naturally gifted cricketers? Yep. Well, probably. Well, that used to be the case at any rate. According to a former cricketer whose name I’ve forgotten, but I’m pretty sure it was Mike Atherton.

A potted cartoon history; memories of 2005; and1953; and the Bodyline tour. You want stellar performances too? How about Jim Laker’s 19 wickets in 1956? Or Michael Vaughan’s 183 at the SCG in 2003? Or David Boon murdering Once In A Lifetime? And to finish it all off, some of the greatest Ashes catches ever.

I’ve finally found the video of Kyle Coetzer’s astonishing leap at long-on in Scotland’s match against South Africa. All the Associates did themselves no harm in this tournament, and this is comfortably the competition’s best catch. Absolutely brilliant. Just look at it!

Tim needs your help:
As a teacher of A-level sports psychology in my school I was trying to find the
clip you showed on the test highlights programme of Andrew Strauss using
visualization before his innings in the second test. Do you know where i can
find it to play to the students. It was on the Channel 5 highlights programme when Simon
Hughes was analysing Strauss’ batting and it showed him out
in the middle going through some of the shots he would be
playing in his innings. It was about a 10-15s clip and it
was sped up from real time. I think it was the highlights
show when Strauss made his hundred in the second innings

Keeping your eye on the ball is essential in all types of sport, but David Fulton takes this theory to the absolute extreme. It also lends a reminder to just how dangerous cricket is. Download the video here if you’re not squeamish.

You’ll have to be really bored to watch this, but as I’m wide awake when I should be asleep in prep for tonight’s Test, it’s been the perfect tonic. Hilarious nicknames that they’ve all got, and it’s good to see the complete lack of political correctness among the squad. It was uploaded by James “The sheep” Harris who, unless you’re completely ignorant, hails from Glamorgan…

By Will 2 years ago, mid-February, 3 Comments »
We talk and moan about India’s vast financial grip over the game, but however much it narks us, it is of little surprise: with a growing economy and a colossal population, the majority of whom love the game, India have the two crucial ingredients to making a lot of money out of an entertainment sport. The same goes for football in the UK: it’s watched and loved by millions, and advertisers know they’ll get decent exposure and are willing to pay for it.
The same can’t be said for cricket in the UK. After the Ashes, in particular the following summer, advertisers were swarming like bees over all things cricket. Even this humble blog was targeted. But the interest, like England’s Test form, has slipped away with depressing haste and we’re back to where we were pre the 2005 Ashes.
The same can’t be said for cricket in Australia either, and they come up with some brilliant advertising campaigns. I’m not a sales man and nor will I ever be, but I do find it fascinating how each country uses advertising to exploit the interest of a game to attract new visitors. Inevitably Australia do it with humour, and do it pretty well. Thanks to Duncans.tv here is Mike Hussey in an advert for the CB Series:
