Four stumps?
By Jonathan Liew last year, mid-December, Comments
Just one of the ker-azy ideas suggested for Twenty20 by players.
It raises the problem of what you’re going to call the stumps. Off, off-middle, leg-middle and leg perhaps, but then what about asking for a guard?
“Leg-middle and leg, please.”
“You mean two and a half legs?”
“That’s it.”
One of the other suggested ideas is to give new batsmen a free hit on their first ball. This strikes me as an intriguing idea, but anyone who has ever played playground cricket will know that you can’t have ‘not out first ball’ without also bringing in ‘one hand one bounce’ to create some sense of balance.
Possible other innovations:
1- Last man stand, where the last man in can bat on with a runner
2- As a variation of this, the last man in can bat on, but he has to turn the bat upside down so he can only hit the ball with the handle
3- Three misses and out
4- One-handed catches to be worth two wickets
5- Reverse sweeps to count double
6- Umpires to be able to catch the ball
7- Team that loses the toss has to play in skins
8- One bat for the whole team
9- Bikini-clad women holding up the over number on a large board, boxing-style, at the start of each over
10- Put piles of cash around the outfield. If the batsman hits it, he wins it
11- Wicket-keepers have to wear fancy dress
12- Replace the ball with a grapefruit
I think I’ve made my point.
