Desmond Tutu’s Cowdrey Lecture (MP3)
By Will 1 month ago, 7 Comments »
Desmond Tutu gave this year’s MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on Tuesday, in which he called for the boycott of Zimbabwe. Andrew Strauss also hinted at a possible boycotting of Zimbabwe’s tour here next year unless the government take prior action.
You can download the entire lecture (1h 12m) here. Tutu’s 26min speech is here, while Strauss and Barry Richards’ discussion can also be listened to.
I think Tutu was at my christening, or my brother’s. Or was it my parents’ wedding? Well whatever. He’s a family friend of a friend, and apparently a bit of a leg end to boot.
Do you agree with Tutu regarding the boycott, or should sport be kept well away from politics?

It’s not quite as side-splitting as Aggers’ moment with Brian Johnston, but Christopher Martin-Jenkins corpsing live on air is still too precious a thing to ignore. Have a listen, and here’s the run of events:
During the 52nd over New Zealand captain Dan Vettori faced England paceman Stuart Broad.
“Broad’s in, he bowls, this time Vettori lets it go outside the off stump, good length, inviting him to fish,” CMJ told listeners.
But then the trouble started. CMJ went on “But Vettori stays on the bank… and keeps his rod down, so to speak.”
At this point I am afraid to admit the laughter started amongst those of us in the box. And I can’t just blame new recruit Phil Tufnell, we were all guilty. Bill Frindall helpfully exclaimed “good luck” and after a few seconds CMJ managed to speak again.
“I don’t know if he is a fisherman, is he?” … the laughter continued but to be fair to CMJ he just went on regardless. At such a moment there is, to be honest, not much a producer can do - and I cannot lie, I know it was childish but I was laughing along as well. Anyway - you have a listen and I dare you not to laugh as well!
There was another great blooper from Radio 4’s institutional announcer, Charlotte Green, a couple of months back.

What better way (for an Englishman at least) to get in the mood for Wednesday night than to listen to the BBC cricket theme tune, Booker T and the MG’s Soul Limbo. Listen, loop, and enjoy.

Woot and woohoo and “jolly well dones” to Ranjit Shinde who, I notice, has just finished producing Cricinfo’s first proper podcast. Nice one Shindig! I haven’t met old Shinde but chat to him at work and Jenny, Cricinfo colleage and fruity-tea-drinker, knows him well. Very slick bit of audio, I reckon. Well done that man.

As mentioned last week, there was a fascinating programme on BBC Radio 4 regarding Wes Hall and other West Indian greats. Well worth a listen, and I’m providing it for you to download here (zipped - 28MB…I have no idea how to “make it smaller,” sorry), because I’m just so damned generous.
Download here
Update: more than 3000 people downloaded the MP3, which has exceeded my “bandwidth allowance” no less. So, I’ll have to put it up somewhere else in the meantime. Sorry.

Like many, I’m fascinated with the great West Indian sides of the 20, 30 and 40 years ago - so I was pleased to note there’s a programme on tomorrow (BBC Radio 4 FM) profiling some of them. Interestingly, the programme appears to be of their playing in the Lancashire leagues.
Called “Wes Hall Broke My Arm,” the synopsis is:
During the 1950s and 60s, a long line of West Indian cricketers, including the fast bowler Wes Hall, played as professionals in the tiny league clubs of Lancashire. Garth Crooks looks at the calypso style these players brought to Pennine towns like Accrington, Nelson and Bacup.
It’s on BBC Radio 4 FM at the same time as tomorrow’s match - so most of us are gonna miss it. Are there any über-geeks reading that might be able to record it and convert to MP3? - Download an MP3 of the programme
Vaughan MP3 on England’s win in ODI2 v Zimbabwe
By Will 4 years ago, at the start of December, No Comments; be the first!

Again I’ve converted a Real Audio interview to MP3 - this is Michael Vaughan commenting on England’s win in the 2nd ODI v Zimbabwe. Pietersen hit a 70, including some pretty massive sixes, although Vaughan talks mainly about Geraint Jones’ excellent innings. Download here

I’ve converted a RealPlayer audio stream from BBC’s site to MP3 - much easier to listen to - of Agnew interviewing Ian Bell. Download here.
