So then, Marlon Samuels’ action has been reported. What’s the verdict? Legitimate action?

Marlon Samuels loses his head
By Will 8 months ago, 2 Comments »
Is Marlon Samuels finally growing up? I’m not so sure. It was a wonderful innings, his hundred against South Africa today, but all too often he nibbles and pokes at those decent deliveries outside his off stump. I admired his determination, and his coolness under raging pressure from Dale Steyn. The ball he fell to was spectacular, and I can’t remember seeing a better one. It was one for the memories.
Anyway, we have a photographer at the ground, Neil Lane, who’s been providing us with some excellent (and occasioanlly lewd) shots, including this one of Samuels ducking. Where’s his head gone?
The standard of photography from the agencies - Getty Images use Gallo Sports, Touchline and AFP - has been generally weak for the entire series. Neil’s, on the other hand, are crisp and inventive.

What did West Indies have for lunch?
By Will last year, mid-June, 2 Comments »
Today was a microcosm of the problems facing West Indies. They dominated the first session, bowling superbly and at last making England scrap for every run. England went to lunch with Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior at the crease…but not a lot else to come.
Then what happened? What on earth were they fed at lunch? After the interval, everything fell apart with the bowlers losing their lines and the captain, Daren Ganga, for some inexplicable reason choosing to bowl Marlon Samuels. It was a session of such diabolical cricket that they fully deserve to lose this Test tomorrow. It was utterly depressing.

England did very well to rub their noses in it, though - and Matt Prior continues to impress. But, still…it’s pretty painful watching West Indies at the moment and I don’t see how they can recover, either. The selection of Austin Richards to their one-day team is a case in point. Just why he was chosen in place of Wavell Hinds, Ryan Hinds, A.N. Other is anyone’s guess. I tried to write a profile for him at Cricinfo and didn’t get on very well at all. The cynic in me thinks there is something more sinister afoot other than simply being a “random selection”.

By Will 3 years ago, at the start of November, 1 Comment »
A gem from Stuart at ABC’s blog (sorry chaps for stealing it all - but it’s too good to ignore):
1 Comment »Marlon Samuels took a shine to yours truly and was always asking questions and looking for insights. Before the Test in Barbados I don’t think I’d ever walked out to bat to be greeted by the opposing 12th man with a comment like this one: ‘Good luck today, I want to see you get a hundred!’ From just about the first time I played against Marlon, in the 2000-01 series in Australia, he’d say, ‘Hey man, give me some of your red rag, I need some luck.’ Eventually I gave in and cut him a sliver of the tattered cloth, which he now carries out to bat each innings. I had to laugh when he scored a quickfire hundred against India and, instead of raising his bat, held aloft the red rag between his thumb and index finger, to the bemusement of all those watching, who had no idea what he was doing.
King Samuels
By Will 3 years ago, at the end of October, 2 Comments »
Does Marlon Samuels owe Bennett King a word of thanks? From Tony Cozier (via Ryan):
Samuels’ promise was obvious in his debut series here four years ago, when he was just 19. He has fallen well short of expectations in the interim and has been kept out of Test cricket since 2003 by the frustrated selectors. But his potential is impossible to disregard and he was chosen for this tour, possibly his last chance. Even Lara could not have surpassed the strokeplay that produced eight sixes and 34 fours in six-and-a-half flawless, magical hours.
Smith is 23 years old, Samuels 24. Five others 25 or under will be in the side on Thursday. There seems to be hope after all for West Indies cricket. The coming month will tell whether or not it is misplaced.
The West Indies could do with an injury to McGrath and Warne to boost their confidence, too…
UPDATE: Ryan makes an excellent point, which we all should be aware of:
2 Comments »But, let’s pay attention to the set-up that’s happening before our eyes. The international Aussie media is setting up a situation where King gets credited for all improvements but, when things fall apart, it is the “system†in the Caribbean that it is the weak link.
Nope, sorry, can’t have it both ways. You either take all the credit or take all the blame. That’s all.
