Londonist interview

4 years ago, at the start of September

My interview with London bloggers, Londonist, is up. Cheers, Alex!

Trafalgar Square victory parade

4 years ago, at the start of September

UPDATE September 13 - the morning after. Live blogging here. England’s jubilant players are on an open-top bus tour around London. Quite amazing scenes, the like of which I don’t think (m)any of us thought we’d see. Awesome! Thousands and thousands of people lining the streets.

Originally posted September 6 2005

Oh God - it’s started already; an expectant nation, and capital city, is planning a victory parade for England if they win the Ashes. Bit of a hostage of fortune…It’ll be held at Trafalgar Square if England do, indeed, win back the urn. More at Cricinfo.

Simon Jones on course for The Oval

4 years ago, at the start of September

Simon Jones is on course to play at The Oval, which is brilliant news. I’d take it with a pinch of salt, however; we’ve seen throughout this series the media-war both teams have waged. But if it’s true, it will make the final Test all the more thrilling and exciting. Meanwhile, MacGill might play (instead of McGrath?)

Cricket in the Park - Trent Bridge and The Oval

4 years ago, mid-August

UPDATE: 31 August 2005, the clapham common venue has been changed to Regent’s Park. More info here.

The ECB have extended their Cricket in the Park events, which is brilliant news. As written about on Cricinfo:

Cricket in the Park extended

Due to overwhelming demand, the ECB’s Cricket in the Park events have been extended for the fourth and fifth Tests between England and Australia.

Such has been the demand for tickets for this summer’s Ashes that the ECB introduced these events to cater for those unlucky enough to miss out on attending the Tests, providing a big screen and a taste of Ashes atmosphere. For the first Test at Lord’s, a giant screen was erected in Regent’s Park, where 3,500 people turned up on the Friday, and 8,000 the following day.

The Saturday and Sunday’s play of the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge (August 27 and 28) will be shown on a giant screen in Wollaton Park, Nottingham. The Saturday and Sunday’s play of the fifth Ashes Test at The Brit Oval (September 10 and 11) will also be shown on a screen in Clapham Common, South London.

Tom Harrison, marketing manager for the ECB, said in a statement released this afternoon: “The big screens in Wollaton Park and Clapham Common will give those fans that can’t get tickets for the matches the chance to join in and experience the unprecedented excitement of this Ashes series with thousands of others - if they’re anything like the previous events, they’ll be fantastic!”

Watching the cricket

Loving this photo - brilliant stuff! Londoners crowding to “find” and watch the cricket on TVs. Cricket’s back, everyone - say goodbye, Football, your reign is over!

Cricket in the Park (no more)

4 years ago, mid-August

UPDATE: 31 August 2005, the clapham common venue has been changed to Regent’s Park. More info here.

A brilliant idea, it’s disappointing that there will be no Cricket in the Park for the fourth and fifth Ashes Tests (Nottingham and London). Perhaps the ECB hadn’t forseen Ashes and Cricket fever sweeping Britain - might they change their minds? Email them and tell them you want more Cricket in the Park…it can’t hurt.

Cricket in the park - Regent’s Park

4 years ago, mid-July

UPDATE: 31 August 2005, Cricket in the Park will be available for the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval. The clapham common venue has been changed to Regent’s Park. More info here.

As you know, the very progressive ECB (and I almost mean that genuinely!) are doing Cricket in the Park this year, beginning with Regent’s Park for the Lord’s Test tomorrow. (more details here)

I can’t go - but if anyone reading this does go, it would be great to hear about it (with photos if poss). If you want to “file a report” about how it went (atmosphere, facilities etc etc) on the site, let me know. Or just send in your photos to stumps@cricket.mailliw.com - thanks.

Eng v Aus - Natwest Challenge, first game

4 years ago, at the start of July

Jones just taken a “useful” catch - thought I’d open a post and leave it open for comments etc as the day goes on. Too busy to contribute anything until tonight though…

Hope none of you have any friends or family in today’s London bombings

Archery coming to Lord’s

4 years ago, at the start of July

London has pipped Paris to the post and will host the 2012 Olympics. Great news (I think). Cricinfo has an interesting article on Lord’s, which will play host to the Archery competitions.

Charity game, Regent’s Park, London, 15th May

4 years ago, mid-May

Despite the reported 25,000 posters advertising the event, a charity and celebrity fund-raising game in Regent’s Park (my favourite of London’s parks) is due this Sunday. Can’t make it myself, but should be an excellent day out with the likes of Frank Skinner and Jamie Theakston playing. Or trying to play!

Andrew Strauss has been told he can’t play by Duncan Fletcher - well, who are we to disagree, at the moment anyway? :) More on this at the Evening Standard’s site

Yes, that’s right, that is Parliament, and that is a cricket match being played in its shadow. I mentioned this in April - more about the match itself here, the offical Space Hijacker’s website here and images of the responses made by MPs here

Wow. Both Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara will play in the Tsunami fundraiser on June 14. Sachin in charge of the MCC (!) and Brian the international XI. Brilliant
