Live chat: West Indies v Bangladesh, Super Eights, Barbados
By Mike last year, mid-April, 2 Comments »
It seems like Bangladesh have had a good World Cup after bashing a couple giants, but find themselves languishing at the footer of the Super Eights table. The West Indies have been highly disappointing in the second stanza having breezed through their pool grouping but they’re also stuck low on two points. As Dileep Premachandran over at CricInfo writes:
It will have escaped no one’s attention that West Indies are currently level on points with Bangladesh and Ireland, an unacceptable state of affairs in a region that dominated the game for nearly two decades.
It’s statement time. Brian Lara is in the final breath of his cricketing career and one might hope that the embattled West Indies could dig a couple specials out to end in a way he might deserve. Bangladesh can foil that and go a long way to secure themselves a final six finish. That would be a grand achievement for the nation.

I can’t believe it’s come to this. South Africa were the No. 1 ranked team in the world a fortnight ago, mixing brilliance and audacity with complacency and bottling. England really could make the last four, like it or lump it. Do they deserve to be there? Do they heck. But it would shake things up and give them genuine belief they can make the final.
With Pietersen facing the country of his birth, today’s match ought to be a real firecracker. Check the scorecard and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Something’s wrong in the universe when Craig McMillan can take three South African wickets. I’m not watching it, and have only just switched on the radio - ensconced in Devon and magnetised to the beach and the outdoors. But it’s clouded over with a sea fog here and it’s high time for a drink and to keep my eye on this match. South Africa are wobbling, to say the least. Incidentally my hosters were switching things today and apparently the site was buggered earlier. Apologies for that. All seems fine again now - if painfully slow.
Anyhoo, here’s a photo

And here’s the scorecard.

Very late on this one- Ponting showing no sense of adventure, sent Ireland in and as I write they are 84 for 9. All in all a brave effort by the Irish so far, and some of Australia’s fielding will cause Ponting some concern. But the luck of the Irish isn’t in Barbados today.

This could be the match of the tournament so far, at least in terms of form, although Australia vs South Africa was right up there as well. That old war-horse Chaminda Vaas has a couple of wickets already and in the 6th over, New Zealand are 4 for 2.
Oh dear. They’re now four down…

Do Bangladesh deserve the label minnows, or the tag of a “banana skin” any longer? India were first to trip up, then South Africa blindly faffed their way to defeat. And England, in such unconvincing form, are the next side to try and tame the Tigers.
Scorecard here. Chat away like the rantings fans that you are.

Right then. Australia v England, 2007 World Cup. Actually Bangladesh kind of spoiled this by beating South Africa last night; had that gone to script, this would be a do-or-die dogfight for England. Now, England can still make the semi-finals even if they lose, as Andrew Miller pointed out. Still, Australia could take on England at Twister and there’d be an edge to the contest, and after losing the Commonwealth Bank finals, Australia’s quite keen to dish out some revenge to England. Revenge really motives Ricky Ponting.
The main question about the Australian team is if they will go with an extra batsman or an extra bowler to cover the injury to Shane Watson. Brad Hodge has a claim for scoring a century in his last innings, but I would prefer to see Australia go with an extra bowler.
Obviously an impartial writer would hope for a good close game, but I’m not impartial. I want England to be thrashed. I doubt it will happen mind you- England are getting to be good at derailing Australia’s best laid plans. In fact, I think England might just sneak a victory on this occasion. There’s been a few upsets about, and I think this might be another one.

Get in there! The Deshis are doing it. Rumours of infighting in the South African squad (Kallis was threatened to be moved down the order. He wasn’t happy about it. So he went out there, trying to smash it around and was less than amused when he got out.)
This is just what this doomed tournament needs. Check the scorecard out and leave your thoughts.

I will hunt down my nearest hat shop and munch my way through it if England beat Sri Lanka today. Call me a cynic, but let’s be brutally honest: they are underprepared, they don’t know their best side and they’re facing a revitalised Sri Lanka playing with the same unbridled aggression and joy which earned them the Cup a decade ago.
Regardless of who wins, let’s hope it is at least a contest and that there will be some good individual performances from both sides.
Here’s the scorecard. Leave your erudite observations and rants in the comments.

Between being peeved, along the lines that Will has laid out below, and the sheer monotony, I have lost interest. Unless something amazing happens, I won’t be turning on the telly until Australia play England on Sunday night.
Well, tonight Ireland play South Africa, and if Ireland actually get close, you might want to comment here. Fulminate away.

The odds of Ireland reaching the Super Eights before the World Cup got underway must have been fairly long. Yet here they are - the tournament’s most slippery of banana skins - about to face the mighty England.

The World Cup group phase winds up today with this game. It’s become more important then first thought, but I’m still slightly surprised that the fixtures worked out with what was expected to be a minnows’ game to finish.
(Will: for those not in the know, if Bermuda win, India go through to the Super Eights!). Keep an eye on the scorecard, leave a comment or two and enjoy.

A big game, this. Both are through to the Super Eights, but the winner takes forward two crucial points. And this is what Ponting reckons
“For us, this is as big a game as a semi-final or a final. The No.1 and No. 2-ranked teams going head-to-head in the World Cup. It doesn’t get much bigger. We’re very excited and we’ve been training very positively this week. Having the five or six days off between games has been a good thing for us. It’s allowed us to freshen up and work on our skills, and there’ll be no excuses on Sunday.”

Okay, Andrew Flintoff, here’s your chance. Apparently he’s been stepping up the gas in the nets - and also bowling quite fast - so today’s match against Kenya represents an ideal opportunity for him to single handedly boost England’s fledgling confidence. Kenya aren’t at their best and ought to be swept aside…well, quite. Leave your comments below, and keep an eye on the scorecard.
