It’s one of life’s great disappointments that the opportunity to poke fun at Germans is so infrequent. Never more so is this true than in cricket - a sport which will befuddle and line the brows of most Deutsch Menschen. And I’ve even worse news for you (unless you’re German): they’ve just beaten us at the very same sport they mock us for creating.
That’s right, you cheerily xenophobic readers: a town from Munchberg (which is presumably what the Titanic ended up doing all those years ago) have beaten and shamed St. Symporians, a village side in England.
So sickened were the church - so shamed and disgusted at their team’s performance, not to mention the damn right rudeness of the Germans for showing some semblance of ability - that an apology was made in the parish magazine.
“In affectionate remembrance of St Symphorians Cricket. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances, RIP. NB - the bails were cremated and the ashes taken to Germany.”
If, like me, you are shaking with embarrassment - fear not. The plonker Germans apparently didn’t even know they’d won, which at least raised a chuckle for our brave Blighties. And, in true stiff-upper-lip fashion, we conceded defeat with honour and grace. There was a rumour the Germans’ cars were torched, and effigies burned throughout the night in the usually sleepy village, but a spokesman for the church unhelpfully commented: “I am He, and He is good”.
The bloody shame of it.

The notion that Germans play cricket is laughable enough (oh come on, admit it! **), but this photo rather takes the biscuit. In an indoor tournament in Dortmund, a bloke is seen trying to will the lost ball down from the roof. Great shot!
** After my last tongue-in-cheek remark about the female form, a week ago, I’m rather reticent about posting my honest opinions on this blog. But it won’t stop me. I do, of course, support all cricket from all nations. I’m British, and we tend to find Germans rather amusing. It’s a two-way street - they find us equally funny.
