Rwanda dumps French, embraces cricket

By Will 2 years ago, at the start of September, No Comments; be the first!

Rwanda may historically be a French-speaking nation, but their increasingly close ties with England has resulted in an upsurge in cricket being played. Murad Ahmed has a fascinating article in today’s Times on Rwanda’s decreasing relations with France and how cricket is just one symbol of the country’s growing affinity with Britain.

Cricket is also a powerful symbol of Rwanda’s shift towards all things English. On a day off, the Conservative volunteers take on Rwandans at the game. Francis Maude, the Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, and opener for the British team, describes Rwanda as “a success story, from a country hollowed out, to a proper functioning state.”Mr Maude top scores in the match with 20, but his wicket leads to a batting collapse, finishing with yet another English defeat at African hands.

Cricket is taking off here. In April Rwanda made the semi-finals of an International Cricket Council tournament in South Africa, beating Lesotho and Mozambique before falling to Ghana, in its best performance yet.

“With Rwanda being a Francophone country, it used to be hard to get the Ministry of Sport to be interested in the game,” says Julius Mbaraga from the Rwandan Cricket Board. “Now, it’s not a problem.”

Crusading through France

By Will 3 years ago, at the end of May, 6 Comments »

The Crusaders, an Australian team comprising former Test, first-class and league players, will travel to France to play a match just outside Paris on June 27 in their 42-day tour of Europe.

The highlights of their tour will be matches against a President’s Italian cricket X1, Switzerland, Duke of Norfolk’s XI and the MCC at the Lord’s Nursery Ground.

The Australian’s will spend a whole week in France visiting the Burgundy vinyards of the Cote d’Or, explore Paris and the Palace of Versailles and admire the beauty of Monet’s gardens at Giverny.

The Crusaders will play a match against Standard Athletic Club 24th June (2pm) at Meudon. From Paris they will travel to the Somme battlefields of northern France and the adopted Australian village of Villers Bretonneux. Then south to the Loire Valley and Chateau Chenonceau and Chateau Villandry and the highlight of the tour – the match against l’Equipe de France de Cricket.

A French XI

By Will 3 years ago, mid-May, 15 Comments »

Further to the French rules of cricket the other day, a Beige Brigadier has prompted this post (so blame him): a French XI. All names must have French origins, or sound vaguely Frenchish. Such as Richie Benaud, Jacques Kallis, Bernard Bosanquet (who?) and so on.

Far too much fun. Get to it.

The rules of cricket…in French

By Will 3 years ago, at the start of May, 16 Comments »

This landed in my inbox this evening: the French rules of cricket, including the modes of dismissal. Or rather, “les suivants d’eliminations” (I think):

The French rules of cricket

I like lbw (obstruction) and hit-wicket (autodestruction). Download the PDF for more.
