What did West Indies have for lunch?
By Will last year, mid-June, Comments
Today was a microcosm of the problems facing West Indies. They dominated the first session, bowling superbly and at last making England scrap for every run. England went to lunch with Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior at the crease…but not a lot else to come.
Then what happened? What on earth were they fed at lunch? After the interval, everything fell apart with the bowlers losing their lines and the captain, Daren Ganga, for some inexplicable reason choosing to bowl Marlon Samuels. It was a session of such diabolical cricket that they fully deserve to lose this Test tomorrow. It was utterly depressing.

England did very well to rub their noses in it, though - and Matt Prior continues to impress. But, still…it’s pretty painful watching West Indies at the moment and I don’t see how they can recover, either. The selection of Austin Richards to their one-day team is a case in point. Just why he was chosen in place of Wavell Hinds, Ryan Hinds, A.N. Other is anyone’s guess. I tried to write a profile for him at Cricinfo and didn’t get on very well at all. The cynic in me thinks there is something more sinister afoot other than simply being a “random selection”.
CommentsJournalistic professionalism

It quickly became apparent during my two outings to The Oval and Lord’s that there are certain “do’s” and certain “don’ts” in the press box, and at press conferences. I thought there would be; I wasn’t expecting a free-for-all and a punch-up if your question got ignored. Although that’d be fun…
Someone clearly lacking any dignity is Val Thomas, writes Ryan:
After Ganga’s answer, Thomas wasn’t satisfied so he followed up by asking Ganga who his “Godfather†was, an obvious reference to team selector Joey Carew. The idea was to embarrass Ganga because Morton was not selected in the final XI.
As an accredited journalist covering the Test, Thomas has the right to ask any question. But, in his haste to make Ganga uncomfortable, he only served to embarrass himself.

This is the problem with what passes for journalism in the Caribbean and Thomas is certainly not alone. There’s a Thomas in every country, a so-called journalist who puts on hometown blinkers and refuses to see rhyme or reason.
Thomas is a disgrace to the profession. A parochial, narrow-minded individual who decides to be disruptive because it serves his own insular interest.
Strong words, and he’s not alone either.
CommentsWest Indies v India, 3rd Test

Now then, now then, now then. The West Indies are racing along in the third Test, which has been good to watch. After Daren Ganga and Ramnaresh Sarwan both brought up their hundreds, India struck back to reduce the West Indies from 346 for 1 to 420 for 5. Regardless, a fairly splendid effort from West Indies (who we like, lots, here down the Corridor. Get down with the Corridor, in fact).
The series is level at 0-0 with one further Test to play after this one, which looks like rain could force a premature end.
