No Comments »In its most recent issue, The New Yorker magazine revisits one of its most famous covers ever. Saul Steinberg’s cartoon on the front page of the 29 March 1976 issue showed the world as seen from New York’s 9th Avenue. Mr Steinberg’s ironic, iconic cartoon, mentioned earlier on this blog (#72), has been recycled, imitated and parodied many times – and now by the New Yorker itself, as a comment on vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s world view.
The world outside Alaska knew little of Sarah Palin before Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced, on August 29, that she would be his running mate. It seems that before that date, Sarah Palin also knew little of the outside world. She has been outside of the US only once, on a visit to Alaska National Guard troops in Germany and Kuwait.

I like seeing where you’re all from, especially if it’s a far-flung place in a remote corner of the earth. Such as the very eastern islands of Alaska where I’ve spotted one or two readers lurking. Therefore, whoever you are, identify yourselves immediately. For those unaware of the landscape, this photo was taken in the region:

I must admit a fascination in knowing who reads this blog. I know of people in the most unlikely of places, companies and countries. I’ve smoked out Iceland and Hawaii and now attention must turn to Alaska. Come out, come out, with your hands up! I know you’re reading, and there’s more than one of you…so do tell us. Are you native and just interested in the great game, or ex-pats or…?

Right – hands up who reads this from Hawaii. I know you do, I can see you! If you have a look at this map, you’ll see which countries are viewing the blog…and there’s a rather significant red blob hovering over Hawaii. So speak up – please do – as I’d be fascinated to hear more about why you read it, and how you found it. On a similar note, there are people from Iceland, central Russia and Alaska; I’d love to know how and why you arrived here, and whether you’re curious cricket fans, or lifelong addicts!
