What with Warne's eulogising about Shaun Tait, his claim that the IPL was the best thing in his career, and saying the Yusuf's innings was the best he's ever seen I'm not sure I can tolerate much more of the spurious nonsense the spews forth from his mouth these days. And his Tweets are littered with elementary spelling mistakes - the Tweets that he sends to Damien Martyn apparently across the breakfast buffet - puh-lease! Personal rant aside, his Royals side are clearly missing something, and that somethig is Ravi Jadeja. That Jadeja was 'banned' from IPL3, for some reason or other, is ridiculous. One of the brightest young talents in India banned by the India board from furthering his game in the IPL, what are they thinking? And Shaun Tait spraying it around like a hosepipe doesn't help.

Not a fan then, Ashes Ernie!

By my reckoning, six of the 12 games so far have gone down to the final over, which is a decent percentage. I agree that very one-sided matches are non-events, but isn't that true of all forms of the game?

However, I'm with you on the issues of Harper and the commentary, which I found funny at first but gets pretty grating after a minute or two.

This IPL sceptic tuned in for the thrashing you describe on Thursday and most of my doubts were confirmed. This form of the game is over as a contest as soon as one team has a shockingly good or bad couple of overs. Close finishes, upon which the shorter forms of the game depend, are rare indeed (although England's last 15 Tests have produced lots of nailbiters).
The Indian / cricketing public have been sold a complete lemon by Mr Modi and his cronies who must be laughing their socks off at how gullible you all are. Lousy cricket, no contest, over-the-hill international players and unknown Indian pups playing to a schedule governed by advertisers and sponsors. It is, in a word, bollocks.
Comfortingly, however, there was still something for the purist in the game I watched; Warne still has charisma, and seemingly a unique license to argue with the umpire. The umpire in question was, of course, Mr Harper, ably illustrating his incompetence in all forms of the game.
The television commentary was appalling, saved only by the comedy of Jeremy Coney pronouncing some teams, Dilley Deerduvuls, Chineye Superkungs, Dick'n'Sharjahs, Kung's Erlivurn Punjarb etc.

It demonstrates that England batsman are not ruthless enough. Bell gets 199, Cook gets 173, Strauss has 18 test centuries with a highest of 177. Strauss is especially guilty of batting throughout the day and either getting out in the last half an hour, or early the next morning. Compare that to Sehwag who has 4 doubles himself, and Sangakarra and Jayawardene whom I guess have 6 between them.

Courtesy of a quick-fire pivot table, it is worth pointing out that, while Sehwag (long may he bat) does have four entries in that table, so does Jayawardene. Kumar Sangakarra, however, has five entries!

Interestingly, KP is the only person to make a score on the list against the West Indies. Not surprisingly, 9 out of 50 of the scores were made against Pakistan, while 7 were made against India, England and South Africa respectively, and 6 against Bangladesh. (Hayden is, and always was, a flat-track bully. He is just one of many). There were four each against Australia and Sri Lanka, two against NZ and 1 against Zimbabwe.

There was a nice moment on the tour of India a couple of years ago, when KP ran down to the boundary to chase a shot, failed to cut it off, ran past the young ballboys who were manning the line and then as he ran back, picked up one of them and ran for a bit with him! Plenty of squeals of delight I'm sure, and tales for later in the day.

It is disappointing, you wouldn't really mark out any of our current bunch as likely to go on and make doubles any time soon. Its not to say they aren't talented, they just somehow don't look like doing it, I can't quite put my finger on it! Perhaps KP. Like you, I'd like to see some more mammoth scores from our lads, but as long as we keep coming up with the goods on the results front, I'll probably learn to live with it!

I can add the same for last years Caribbean tour - he always had time for any of the local fans who wanted autographs, and acknowledged greetings at several venues.

It changed my view of him, he is professional and nice with it.

Josh,
Add Gambhir also to the list of Delhiites. Awesome batting firepower. Hoping Kolkata is abit more competitive this time to make matters more interesting.

2008 may seem like a disaster, but it was actually a carefully laid plan, along with KP's signing, to gain the element of surprise for when they started doing well. Obviously.

Josh - I think they'll do it too. Last year I put money on them, so providing I don't make that mistake again they're bound to run away with it!

Srishti - Fair point, I was mainly referring to their 2008 campaign, which was a bit of a disaster and saw Kallis dropped at one point. But you're right, they bounced back last year and answered their critics.

Bangalore are hardly slow. They made some of the highest totals in the Champions League, and Dravid and Kallis have actually adapted well to the format. And of course, there is Ross Taylor.

Can't look beyond Delhi for me, they also have the most cheesy name (something of an achievement in the IPL). Sehwag, Dilshan, De Villiers....all in the same side...surely this time is theirs?

For the record, I think the 'Most Fetching Kit' award goes to the Knight Riders (also a challenger for cheesiest name), that black and gold number really is a hit with me.

Too much in the way of attention, adulation, sponsorship, photo shoots, fitness, practice, fast cars and believing all the bullshit. What England needs is the straight talking, straight batted, no nonsense, pie and a pint featured, English born, last of the Corinthians, Robert Key.

"It threatens to weaken the connection between the national team and the wider game."

The England rugby squad (which includes players of South African, NZ, French and Irish heritage or upbringing) is more representative of most of the rugby clubs in SW London than one made up solely of 'true' Englishmen.

"And it makes it harder for new powers to arise in the game"

Rugby union tried to get around this problem a few years ago by introducing a rule that you could only play for one country. Now the Pacific Island nations want it changed becuase they feel they are more competitive if they can pick All Blacks of PI heritage and who are reaching the end of their careers.

Or to put it another way... would Ireland be better off with an Eoin Morgan now, or an Eoin Morgan in 5-6 years time with 50 Tests under his belt?

Another 20 runs today, perhaps thats his ceiling now, 20-25 runs. I want the old Kev back! He needs several hours at the crease in the two tests, or we're screwed.

Will likely have a look at both the telly and the YouTube coverage on the grounds that some cricket is better than no cricket.

But it's the sublime excitement of the test: the ebbs and flows of fortune, the slow realisation that the balance of the game is shifting, in your side's favour or otherwise, and the nearly-unbearable tension of the close finish that really floats our boat here at Nurdler Towers.

And Modi just has no game when it comes to that stuff.

It's utter tosh. Greedy suits making greedy monkeys perform for quantities of nuts that will make them sick or, even worse, behave like footballers.
The consuming public are the real suckers by falling for such nonsense.

Hendo has been the resident bore in uk.sport.cricket for many years, where he is notorious for his refusal to acknowledge that he is not omniscient.

When he is not complaning about the parentage (a favourite word) and upbringing of Mark Butcher or Kevin Pietersen (but not of Andrew Strauss), he pursues futile arguments with university maths lecturers in which he reveals his ignorance of elementary statistical concepts.

My answer to your question on Ireland may be summed up by the words "Jeremy Bray".

Foreigners in the England cricket team - I would argue the only real "foreigners" are Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Prior, Strauss and Kieswetter were all raised in England, which should really be the qualification (I know Kieswetter also spent a lot of time in SA but he has always said he thought of England as home and there is no reason to disbelieve him).

As an aside, in the days when counties also had a birth qualification to play for them, Wally Hammond played for Gloucestershire (where he was raised) not Kent (where he was born) which led to a five-year delay in his playing Test cricket due to the pique of the Kent board. I'd hate to think we were getting back to that level of parochiality. Birthplace is after all an accident over which nobody has any control!

The current team makeup of imports is actually quite low by historical standards - does the name of Basil D'Oliveira ring any bells? Or Allan Lamb, Tony Greig, Robin Smith, and the Nawab of Pataudi Sr? Brendan Nash of the West Indies may also be mentioned - but I'd say he's doing everyone a favour by giving some much-needed backbone to their lineup.

Cricket tourism is a fact - always has been, and probably always will be. The question is are they - spec. Trott and Pietersen - committed to the England team, or only doing it for money/glamour/ego? As long as the answer to that is "the England team," I doubt if the fans will care overmuch about the accent. If they are seen to be out for themselves, that will change.

Its exciting, its cricket after all! I'm happy its on ITV, i'll watch what I can and with the sheer volume of talent on show, there's gotta be some good games! I'm particularly interested to see how the old boys, the likes of Ntini and Murali get on, less so in ITV's presenters - that could be very bad!

Ooo spooky - have just looked on the ITV website to see who is involved in presenting - Matt Smith (not the Dr Who actor though, some smarmy looking bloke), a Bollywood star and Simon Hughes and "more guest experts to be announced".
Nannes suddenly proved to be Dutch rather than Aus. He had represented Aus in Skiing and had played for Victoria before he suddenly became Dutch, you have it the wrong way around.

But neither he or Morgan should have been able to play for two different nations within a couple of months.

That really does smell bad.

I'm inclined to think that English cricket fans feel a connection to England, I am really doubtful that the makeup of the side matters that much to the vast majority of fans, but I may very well be wrong on that. If you ask me, I want England to win, of course I don't want a bunch of rent-a-players, like those Kenyan runners who switched allegiance to Qatar for a hefty fee, but we're not talking about that. I think we're a ways off the fans feeling a disconnect from Team England, as it were, just yet.

If you ask me, I want England to win, of course I don’t want a bunch of rent-a-players, like those Kenyan runners who switched allegiance to Qatar for a hefty fee, but we’re not talking about that. I think we’re a ways off the fans feeling a disconnect from Team England, as it were, just yet.

Love the bold call Ernie. Sure hope you're wrong though!

It's a shame: out of necessity England have finally learned how to live without him (something which took three years to do) and now he's back we're still effectively without him.

I thought we needed him to win the Ashes over here, and I was wrong. I'm pretty sure we do need him to win them over there though, so it's going ton be an interesting few months.

He's just got out to ANOTHER slow left-armer... this is getting ridiculous!

Rich, you predict calls for KP's head. So I ride to your rescue and make that call, though quite where one could put such a mammoth bonce without creating a serious hazard to passers by is of concern.
Bold statement coming: he's peaked, lost it, had his day, finished as a serious force in international cricket. Doubtless he will retain his place in the England team for a good while yet on the back of past glories, but read this again when he's had a stinker in Australia 2010/11.

Hi, gymnastics is the hardest sport in the world you need a lot of strength flexibility and balance.
It also takes up most of your time as most gymnasts have to train 8 hours a day!!If you want to be a elite you basiclly have to give up your child-hood.
And golf isnt hard, you hit a ball! Golf is a relaxing sport unlike gymnastics

Now they can't even lose 5-0, so the conclusion remains true. And can anyone explain to me why Andre Fletcher gets a game and Denesh Ramdin gets dropped? And David Bernard? Dear me.

lol @ Frugal Bastard.

Is a good story though. There needs to be more matches between the top cricketing nations and 'minnow nations'.

I know the International cricketing calender is pretty much full at the moment but how good is it watching the 'minnows' at the world cup, you even find yourself cheering them on.
Maybe they could play some more 20-20 and One Day matches against the top teams annually. Or even matches with the top state, county, provincial and other 'first class teams'
