Till the Cowdreys come home

By Jonathan Calder last year, at the start of November Add your comment below

Congratulations to Angus and Grant for supplying the correct answer to my question. The other father and son, besides Frank and George Mann, to have captained England are Colin and Chris Cowdrey.

Hywel, see me afterwards.

If you are really clever you will now be able to tell me who played in an England test side with both Colin and Chris Cowdrey.

I think that would have to be Pat Pocock.

And I’ll say it again … sorry – thought my first attempt hadn’t registered.

Brian Close? I know he played for a helluva long time.

That will be Pat Pocock. Must say, though I was enthusiastically following cricket at the time, I missed his 1980s recall – there must have been an injury crisis?

Sadly, you don’t have to be that clever to get this: Cricinfo is a great help, though some prior knowledge certainly saves time!

Pat Pocock. Did Pocock not go about 12 years in Test cricket without scoring a run?

Yes, Percy Pocock. I thought it was, but had to check.

    This is just embarrasing. :)

DC: He went to India in 1985/6.

England’s new captain David Gower hit upon the novel idea of selecting our best two spinners for the tour. He was told that Pocock was too old and Edmonds was too awkward, but he won that battle and we won the series.

Make that the 1984/5 to India.

Is that the tour when Gower said to Cowdrey “would you like Gatting any wider at slip?” to which Cowdrey replied: “Any wider and he’d burst”?
