Gamesmanship

By Will last year, mid-July Add your comment below

So, what’s the verdict in the Ponting v Strauss mountain out of a molehill? It’s beautifully divided between the two nations, it seems: Australia are disgusted by England’s delaying tactics; England are flippant and condescending about Ponting’s accusations.

And then the mousy Hauritz decides not to side with his captain, rather ending the whole furore.

I can’t help but feel it’s blown out of all proportion, and Ponting is in danger of letting England and the media get under his skin. As happened in 2005.

You?

Hauritz wasn’t being mousy. It would have taken some guts to disagree with your captain in public.

It was a horrible clumsy attempt at time wasting, and Strauss’ excuses don’t hold water. That being said, the last over situation really wasn’t much of an incident.

The double physio visit for Swann was much sillier. One should be ok, but the second in the same over should be retire hurt or bat on.

I find the venom at Ponting rather ridiculous. He seems to have been making a concerted effort to improve his own behavior in the last few years.

If the situation had been reversed – that Australia were doing what England did – I’d be furious as well, to be honest. I don’t blame Ponting in the least. Having said that, thank holy christ that England DID. I was watching the last 45 minutes through my fingers.

I’d rather England left this sort of gamesmanship to the Aussies and Ponting left the whingeing to us Poms.

Stop making such a big deal of it…

    That’s not angry Ricky Ponting.

I don’t think Ponting’s tried to make a big deal of this at all. I think it’s the media beating it up … Ponting and the Aussies are happy to move on, and so should everyone else.

It seems that Ponting’s more perturbed at the typically silly media outcry at his comments now than he is the incident himself. Its over now, doesn’t matter.

I think the point most seem to be missing is that he decided to bowl Hauritz and North, neither of whom looked like taking a wicket against even a tail-end dogged defence. The likelihood was that had he used Hilfenhous and Siddle, or got Johnson to bowl at the stumps, Australia would have won the test match.

I agree with Darryl – it’s probably media hype. If this happened in County cricket, it would hardly get a line in the papers. But the journos need something extra to write about.

    Ashes fever strikes again!

What a strange way to describe Hauritz. Considering the very public scorn he has been held in, he appears to have more guts than both teams put together.

Punter is an odd man. I am sure he must have a sense of humour, but you must have to dig.
