Where and how to watch the Ashes in New York

By Will last year, at the end of June Add your comment below

Sadly, I don’t have the answer. This is a plea that someone might know. New York must have hundreds of cricket fans and Nancy needs your very urgent help:

How about watching the 2009 Ashes series (well, parts of it) live on TV at a bar, or other public place, in NYC? Daily coverage begins at 6 am, our time – know of anyplace that’s making a special effort?

Hurry – she hasn’t much time to plan her days off before the series of all series gets underway…

Will, this is a tough one. In the old days, I used to watch live cricket in the Lexington Ave area – but that was for India’s matches. With live streaming on the net, I’ve stopped bothering with bars, especially since they are flaky, do not turn up the volume, and care little about cricket fans. NYC’s expat English community seems to care more for football, and hence you will find plenty of bars showing the EPL but not cricket. However, this time around it might be possible to find an EPL-obsessed bar that also shows the cricket. One place might be Nevada Smith’s on 3rd Ave (I think around 10th or 11th Streets). Another good bet might be Eight-Mile Creek (in Soho, on Mulberry Street) if it is still open. This is an Australian restaurant, and they might show the Ashes. I’ve seen some matches here a few years ago (an India-Paki ODI series).

    Cheers,
    Samir

Like Samir, I don’t know of any bar in NYC showing the cricket. However I have a subscription to Willow TV and would be happy to ensconce myself in a wireless internet cafe on an Ashes weekend if anybody woudl care to join me??
