IPL final – Bangalore Royal Challengers v Deccan Chargers

By Will last year, at the end of May Add your comment below

So it’s the starwars final in Johannesburg today. Match kicks off at 16.30 local. I’ll be on the beach, but if you have any thoughts on today’s final, or indeed the tournament as a whole, leave a comment.

Take away the South African and Aussie players and the IPL becomes ordinary. The established Indian Internationals like RP Singh,Rohit Sharma and Raina performed well. Pandey was the only fringe player to emerge so it doesn’t augur well fro India’s bench strength,

Delhi lost the semi because they benched McGrath. All that experience going to waste. Deccan won it because they had Gibbs,Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma. Backed by the leading wicket taker in RP Singh. Bangalore overachieved by making the final. Kallis lumbers in this short version .

Despite the crassness and tasteless commercialisation Gilchrist’s batting and Kumble’s bowling were top drawer.

Lalit Modi’s best work is done behind the scenes. He sulks even when he smiles.

How many ads does Test Cricket need? IPL is over, the World Twenty/20 is imminent. But still another six weeks before the Ashes Test. Thank God there are Monty Python repeats on TV.

Haven’t been interested in this tournament at all to be honest…Twenty/20 doesn’t excite me much, even one day criket doesn’t really do much for me (world cup aside). Give me test criket any day.

Richo, the esteemed Mike Coward says that Twenty/20 is monopolising the conversation of cricket and I agree with him. Administrators, worldwide, are also falling over themselves to accomodate this version of cricket. The only plus side is that it does open up the income stream to a lot more players and umpires.

Meaningless one dayers also leave themselves open to match fixing.

Sensibly handled it could actually strengthen Test Cricket. Unfortunately not many administrators are blessed with this common sense.

Not long to go now for the Ashes.

Well the IPL is over for this year and a great success again. It will be interesting to see how it will evolve. Will it stay as a breeding ground for Indian players with only 4 overseas players per game or will it change. One of the anomolies that has appeared this year is with 10 overseas players being picked by each franchise then 6 of them just sit on their collective backsides and get paid mega bucks. Why have 10 players in your squad. It seems to me that something has to give.
    Some options may be;

*reduce the number of overseas players.
*allow more than 4 overseas players per game.
*do nothing and watch a new league start that offers the players sitting on the side lines the chance to play in an international competition against the best players in the world.
I am sure there are people in the IPL that can see having players of the ilk of Mcgrath, Henderson, Collingwood and Langeveldt getting virtually no exposure this year is not a good way to run a comp. Sure these guys have still earnt their money but their desire to perform has not been satisfied.
There are other T20 comps in the pipeline and you can bet they will be looking at this factor and use it to get an edge on the IPL.
The IPL are lobbying the ICC to create a space in the calender for the IPL to have access to all players. Over the last two years players have shuffled in and out of IPL due to their countrys demands for their time. If the space is created and there are no changes to this years rules then there will be even more overseas players warming the benches. It will be interesting to see what transpires.
I guess they could bring in a rule that players who have retired from their national sides cant play IPL and that would open up a few spots for the overseas players. You would only lose guys like Kumble, Hayden, Warne and of course the winning captain Gilchrist!?! ONLY JOKING!
The IPL have shown an ability to think on their feet and make things happen. So i will watch with interest to see how the IPL evolves.
