    Interesting poll result, Will.

Are people simply voting along nationalist lines, or are voters willingly voting for the other side if they genuinely think they will win?

Well I’m voting purely along nationalist lines.
And, in the absence of Glenn McGrath, it falls to me to predict the 5-0 Australian triumph…

This poll is the only thing that will be neck and neck in regards to the Ashes.
Once Johnson (we haven’t seen the best from this kid yet, trust me) and co have ripped through the frail Pommy bats:-), Hughes will lead from the front with the bat and i’ve a feeling were gonna see a big series from Ponting and Hussey.

A series bound to be dominated by the ball, which means results and exciting cricket. The side that can put together the best three TEAM innings (in separate Tests) will win.

That’s going to mean one or two batsmen in one side or the other will have to stand up.

For Australia we’ll probably rely on Ponting again and who knows who else. You’d say Hussey but he needs form, Hughes looks awesome but new, Kattich??, Clarke?? North?? – hard to say one of those will dominate an entire series. Same goes for England. There’s pressure on some new guys, and it could be Cook’s time to shine.

Someone will do it though and make a name for themselves. Ponting capping of an incredible career, or Hughes, Bopora, or maybe North launching one. Hmmm?

For a neutral like me, it has to Australia by a mile

For the record SpryCorpse, Glenn McGrath spoke at a function at my cricket club over the summer, and he predictded a 5-0 result then.

I think Australia will win, but it might not be a drubbing. I actually think a lot of our batsmen will struggle, and that includes Ponting who seems to not be as effective against high-quality swing-and-seam bowling. His aura of invincibility is basically gone, and I’m looking forward to the Ponting-Broad/Anderson battle very much.

If we win, it’ll be due to our pace attack IMO. Australia by 3-1 or 3-2.

Australia will start as favourites, but England can win it. For Engalnd to win the Ashes, 5 things need to happen:
    1. Flintoff gets fit, bowling with hositility
    2. Alistair Cook needs to score big runs
    3. Monty Panesar needs to redicover some form and form a great partnership with Swann
    4. Ravi Bopara to carry on with his good form and take the attack to the Aussies
    5. Stuart Broad to add an extra pace to his bowling and continue his rapid rise

We can rely on KP, Strauss, Collingwood and Anderson to have fine series. Panesar, Onions and Sidebottom to compete for the final bowling slot.

Good point Stu about the three innings. But it has to be in the first innings. That will prove the batters have mastered the pace and/or spin. Onions and Bresnan seem the weak links. The first toss at Cardiff could decide the tone of the series. Flat pitches and I back Australia to win 4-1. A bit of weather around and Anderson looks likely.

I am predicting flat pitches because that is what the broadcasters want. And I suspect the ECB would not be unhappy if all the matches went five days

Well, I voted on nationalist lines as I think it will be close… as Marcus said our batsmen have been inconsistent. My other concern is that we struggle to take 20 wickets at times. (not that England have been great at that either) Of course there is always our ‘Graeme Smith’ tactic, where we just injure people instead of getting them out.

I do think we have a slight edge, and I think if we do well initially it will give us momentum and mess with the frail psyche of the English team. Except for Pietersen, who will then perform brilliantly amidst tragic losses.

On a purely selfish note, I want a flat pitch at Lords coz I’m going :) So I want it to go for five days but have great cricket all along and an interesting conclusion in the last 10 overs. Is that asking for so much???

A lot could happen between now and 6 July. But if England go with their last Test Eleven and Australia have two changes from the last test against SAfrica(Lee and Stuart Clark for Hilfenhaus and McGain) then experience weighs in the Aussie’s favour. A total of 399 Tests against 294 for England. The Aussie batters have a collection of 68 Hundreds against Englands 56. The Aussie bowlers have 524 wkts against England’s 221.

KP is the only Batter averaging over 50 and the Aussies have two in the mid 50’s and one in the high 60’s(Ponting Hussey and Hughes)Aussie batters from 1-8 have scored tons. England are not bad with the top 6 scoring tons. KP has the best strike rate followed by Johnson

Based on these figures England will need all the public support they can muster.

Dont choke on your warm beer.Seriously, though I love The Bass Ale.
    cheers

I do want England to win, but I can’t actually see the possibility of that happening. Decent batsmen and bowlers and Prior’s not doing too awful a job behind the stumps. But I can’t see them standing up to the Aussies. I predict 4-1 or 3-2. Us England fans just have to relive winning the Ashes in 2005 over and over again on our DVDs.

Hey,Porridge,if it is any consolation the English fans have more humour and goodwill towards touring teams. Lately the Aussie crowds have been overly parochial and dont have any comeback except AUSSIE OI OI OI. Sounds like pigs grunting!
I remember the infamous Aussie barracker Yabba (they erected a statue in his honour at the SCG) shouting out to John Snow as he was slapping away a pesky bush fly.”Now dont you go killing our flies”

Pity, the Hill is gone and so has the humour and the bonhomie. Talk to you some more when the Ashes are on.

Looking forward to the ashes. It is interesting to see the comments re who will prevail. On the one hand you have Aust. coming of a win in South Africa against the second ranked side in the world in conditions that were supposed to favour the home side. Then you have England winning at home in seamer friendly May against the lowest ranked side in test cricket ( no i dont count bangladesh or zimbabwe – does any one ) who did not come to play anyway. I think they were all too busy counting all the extra money they were getting for the tour, or crying in their soup over what they missed by not being available for the more lucrative IPL.
The answer to who will win should be a no brainer but this is the ashes and both sides have some new faces lokking to make a name for themselves. Should be gripping cricket and i will predict 2-1 to Aust. with 2 draws as once again the powers that be dish up plumb wickets with the grass shaved off at the last minute.
