Who should England drop? You decide

By Will last year, mid-February Add your comment below

Given England’s current debacle, it’s high-time we all did what England fans love to do: pretend we’re the selectors. It’s all very well everyone moaning about how dire the situation is when we all know how gleeful we really are. Britons can’t cope with success; we do, however, do a great line in depression and cynicism. This is our time. Stand tall, England fans, and show the world how we thrive in this meadow of misery.

I’ve chosen Cook, Bell, Harmison and Collingwood as the four candidates in the firing line, and you can choose a maximum of two to be dropped. So, vote in the poll and leave a comment with your reasoning.

I opted to drop Bell, who I think genuinely needs a rest, and Collingwood, who is a mess.

Shah has simply got to play. There is no other way. The problem with the squad is that there aren’t really enough batsmen with a claim to play. I think Prior deserves to get a run behind the stumps, otherwise I might draft in Tim Ambrose and put Matt Prior in at #3. As it stands, I’d rather it be Adil Rashid, who would be well-protected in such a bowler-heavy lineup but might be exposed as a batsman. Oh well, that’s the risk you take by selecting a squad with such thin batting.

Rashid would give Strauss a lot of attacking options and being one down, England need to focus on winning – which as always means getting twenty wickets.

Strauss, Cook, Shah, Pietersen, Prior, Flintoff, Rashid, Broad, Sidebottom, Harmison, Panesar.

Not bringing a young batsman into the Test squad was such a massive mistake. Perhaps Bopara should be drafted in.

Drop Geoff Miller, Hugh Morris, Otis Gibson.
Miller knows nothing about grooming players and so there are no obvious replacments for failures.
Gibson knows nothing about coaching bowlers as witnessed by the decline in bowling incisiveness.
Morris’s position is as big a sinecure as Bell’s.

I’ve gone with Bell and Colly also.

I’m all for getting on the phone to the Sky studio in the UK, and getting Big Fat Rob Key in. He’s grown up since he last played and seems to have a very good and balanced head on his shoulders (more figuratively than physically), and is well respected across the world. And he can bat at 3, (and maybe cover the openers), while I feel Shah would be better suited to 5 – otherwise I would say that Pieterson should go to 3.

I’m assuming that his absence means that Monty is already gone in your mind?? Fair, I guess… to be honest if we had any ready-made replacements I think I’d drop all 4 of the above with Monty. But we don’t, so… this will do.

I can’t believe Panesar’s not on your list.

Bell, Harmison & Panesar to go for me.

Panesar once agian failed spectatculalry in spin-friendly conditions, & showed an abject lack of variety.

I see Monty didn’t give his wicket away. Perhaps he should be promoted in the batting order.

I’ve been one of Bell’s biggest supporters since he first appeared, but it’s time he took a nice break from international cricket and let someone else have a go. I’m still holding that England cricket went completely downhill (as opposed to just a little) after the first time Vaughan got injured after the 2005 Ashes.

If you took Monty out, who would you replace him with guys?

How about Swanny? Better bat, good form in India, better option IMO.

If you took Monty out, who would you replace him with? I’d see if there are any talented spinners in South Africa who might be interested in a change of scenery ;)

Ian Bell’s Test Career R.I.P. 2005-2009. Died after a long and painful struggle. ‘It’s for the best really’ was what mourners were heard to say afterwards.

Seriously though, time should be up for at LEAST one of Bell, Cook and Collingwood in favour of Shah (probably all three if we had the options). Jimmy A wouldn’t have done any worse than Harmy/Sidey either…

I went for bell and colly. bell just hasnt performed well enough of late, shah may not be the answer but bell isnt doing enough to not give shah a chance.

colly, is a great fielder, but his batting has again been poor for while. ive never been a fan of his bowling either, surely fielding ability alone is not enough to get you into a test side anymore? not sure who to replace him with on the current tour though :)

I suggest dropping everyone who is English. Keep the South Africans, Indians , Pakistani’s , and fill up the rest with Kolpak players, cause you guys sure as hell don’t have any decent youngsters (U-19’s system) or domestic players coming up.
