Obscene? Will, who let this dolt loose on this blog? How is this amount of money raised for the rebuilding of communities affected by a natural disaster ‘obscene’?
Mark, keep your vapid opinions to yourself in future.

Australia have levelled the five game one day series with New Zealand, after a 6 wicket win in Adelaide – but the cricket was overshadowed, in part, in the wake of the disastrous Victoria bushfire. Sponsors of the series, Commonwealth Bank, pledged to donate $5000 for every six hit in the game and $100 for every run scored, meaning that by the end of play they had raised just over $6 million, via donations from players, TV viewers, cricket boards etc.
Australian squad member Peter Siddle, not playing in the game, spent the game roaming around the crowd, asking for donations from generous members of the Australian cricketing public. Siddle’s family live in an area affected by the fires and he revealed that a member of his family had lost friends to the deadly blazes.
It’s good to see that in a time of a national crisis that cricket and sport in general can still play it’s part, however small or trivial. The incentive to hit sixes and raise more money could have also increased not only the entertainment factor but the chance of players giving their wickets away. However, batsman were not to be deterred and as Michael Hussey crashed a six over long on to win the game, their was a sense not of one team winning and one losing but of both doing their part to help out.
The obscene amount of money raised will certainly play it’s part in the rebuilding phase of this tragedy and cricket, on this occasion, can be proud of it’s collective self. It’s always heartwarming to see teams and nations rally when their countries are in crisis – Sachin Tendulkar’s wonderful hundred to beat England in Chennai last December was a tribute to those lost in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
This act of generosity from both Australia and New Zealand and the sponsors of the series ensured that although Australia have fought back from two matchs down, the saddening loss of life will still be at the forefront of Australian minds. Good on them.
And, by the by, it looks like it’s going to be a cracker of a series decider in Brisbane on Friday.

Mark, keep your vapid opinions to yourself in future.
Sport can definitely do its bit for those affected by natural calamities given its wide reach.
The last ODI should be a cracker. The Kiwis have probably never had a better chance to beat Australia in Australia.
Chris, before you get your knickers in a twist I think you should read the article again.
Mark clearly says “The obscene amount of money raised will certainly play it’s part in the rebuilding phase of this tragedy and cricket, on this occasion, can be proud of it’s collective self.”
He’s saying it’s a good thing, and the use of ‘obscene’ I’m sure is in reference to the amount of money, rather than the intentions with which it was donated.
So pipe down, idiot.
The article itself is saying that raising money for people in need is a good thing. Well, that’s nice to know. I need people to tell me that.
So, you think Mark has used the word ‘obscene’ in reference to the amount of money? I suppose you have figured that out from the phrase ‘obscene amount of money’. I am evidently dealing with a forensic scientist of some genius to have figured that out.
Perhaps you could enlighten this ‘idiot’ as to how the word ‘obscene’ can be applied to the amount of money raised by the good people of South Australia? Footballer’s wages are obscene. Bankers’ bonuses are obscene. Money donated to victims of this horrific episode is not.
Mark may have just used the wrong word. I guess that’s a strong possibility. I just think that if someone can be that wrong about a common English word then their forte isn’t blogging in English. Hey, and maybe someone who thinks that he’s not wrong and ‘obscene’ might just mean ‘a lot’ shouldn’t waste his time calling people names when some sort of remedial education would be a better use of it?
ob?scene
–adjective
1. offensive to morality or decency; indecent; depraved: obscene language.
2. causing uncontrolled sexual desire.
3. abominable; disgusting; repulsive.
Can we get this nerd Chris Weston out of here????
Calm down Christopher.Stop nitpicking, you lil nerd.We get what Mark was trying to say.
OK,obscene is/was the wrong word to use.As long as the blog makes a point I & most normal guys are OK with the odd mistake here & there.
You’re the sort of guy who’d lecture people for hours on why it’s an ‘obscene’ mistake to say Yuvraj Singh averages 38 in ODI’s.I can just imagine you jumping up & down ,going-”37.7 you freak,it’s 37.701752872.”
1 wierd guy,you are.
Charitable cricket… uncharitable blog comments Chris… tuttut.
With the obvious, now unmentionable, exception, you can’t really argue with the sentiment of this blog entry. Its raison d’etre of highlighting both the tragic situation which has devastated Australia and the efforts being made by the cricket world to in some way make a difference to those affected is most definitely worthy. I for one (not being to keep my finger on the pulse of world cricket at all time) would not have probably known of the fund-raising efforts had it not have been for the above, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
Therefore thank you Mark for raising awareness of the acts of charity you point to.
P.S. I won’t judge you by it but revise the their/there/they’re word group… I say no more
Being called ‘wierd’ (sic) by you is hardly a withering insult. I don’t have a problem with anyone making a mistake but if you are going to inflict your text on the world, you ought to make an effort to get it right. Maybe that’s just an old-fashioned opinion.
Does Yuvraj average 38 in ODIs? I can’t imagine caring. As your contributions tend to be undecipherable gibberish which seem to contain stuff about the Indian economy, please forgive me if I ignore them in future.
This is all getting out of hand. I don’t think there is ample room for Chris Weston and his over-inflated ego in this discussion.
Perhaps we should get back to the task at hand?
Australia are looking tasty, and I would plug for Michael ‘Pup’ Clarke to be pushed up the order.
My ‘comments’(more like a line) on the “Indian Economy” were in response to a moron like you.
Did you have traumatic experiences as a child??
Got picked on as a kid??Bullied???
You are 1 frustrated individual.
I see that you’ve set aside this special time to get yourself insulted on the internet.
I’m guessing ‘wierd’ isn’t insulting enough for you.
Maybe you’re some kinky guy who likes getting insulted.
I don’t give a shit.
I see you don’t have problems with people making mistakes.Expected, since you’re a big one yourself.
A rejection letter from MENSA wouldn’t be to much of a surprise for you now, would it?
Well Chris,I’m busy now. Can I ignore you some other time?
Keep typing. Maybe, someday, you’ll randomly type something semi-intelligent.
I think it’s fantastic that the sponsors are ever-ready to play a big role in such matters.Great to see and such charity should be made a regular part of international cricket purely because of the amount of money that exists in the game now.I think Modi has adopted a few villages in India and IPL money if I am not wrong is being used as well.More of this please.
(Chris, obscene can mean excessive. The context in which it is used here is wrong, but everybody understands the point that is being made.
Nerdish-Nitpicking & getting your knickers in a twist is exactly what you are successfully managing to do.
Take your high on emotion, feminine, pathetic rants and leave for that remand home you belong in.)
Guys, don’t get me wrong. I am not beyond admitting when I make a mistake. I reacted to the phrase in Mark’s post out of a genuine irritation that anyone could call the donations made on that day ‘obscene’. Yes, it can mean excessive (although with a very particular slant). Do you think the donations were excessive?
However, in the context of the article, it is clear that Mark made a mistake. I happen to think that his posts are not up to much.
So, I’m sorry for going off on one – it was not really justified. What was justified was the response to the juvenile posts that followed. Let’s see, I’m an ‘idiot’, a ‘nerd’, ‘wierd’ (spelled incorrectly, twice!), and ‘feminine’. Is ‘feminine’ an insult? I don’t know.
Anyway, don’t worry. I’ll keep posting the good stuff, it would be wrong of me to abandon you.
Chris Weston:When you get called an ‘idiot’,'nerd’ etc etc repeatedly,it usually means you’re exactly those things or something close. Here’s 1 more you can add to that list>>Immature.
Spelled isn’t used by british or aussie natives. Are you American???????????
Idiotic feminine nerd with an over-inflated ego is what everyone seems to think you are.Do I agree?????Maybe.
You do seem nerdish & feminine.& yes, feminine is insulting if your name’s Chris. If it was Christina you’d have been fine.
Can you imagine what her reaction would be if you called a lady masculine???????
LOL.
I’ll conclude by humbly requesting you to abandon us.
Straight or gay abandon,we don’t care. But abandon us nevertheless.
Great to see the amount of money raised to help the people affected by this tragic event (not just by the cricketing community but the whole nation and international community that contributed)
Regarding the series decider what a let down that was maybe the upcoming 20/20 match should serve as the Chappell/Hadlee decider.
Good idea, Richo. They were going to decide it with a 22/22 match anyway, what’s different about a 20/20 in thse exceptional circumstances?
By the way, am I the only one who thinks that this blog (specifically the comments section) has become somewhat nastier than it was, say, a year ago? And this isn’t even over the Oval Test or Sydney- it’s about one man’s interptetation of the word “obscene!” Absolutely ridiculous.
I’m new to this blog and have found it attracts mostly intelligent comments/contributers, this thread is the first time i’ve seen such a petty slanging match, i’ve nothing against a good debate mind you, but your right Marcus ridiculous!!!
My fault, for over-reacting to a crass use of language. I seem to have flushed out the lunatic fringe, though.
Come on guys, try to keep a lid on it. Mark’s a young, aspiring writer who I invited here to get some experience. He’s going to made the odd mistake, as we all do – but slamming him so harshly is a bit unfair. Sticks and stones, and so on!
19,now 20 responses to “Charitable cricket”.Most, debating the meaning of the word ‘obscene’.
As the yanks would say, lets chill guys.Just a bit.
Chris,5 posts to say you don’t like Mark Tilley or his blogging skills or for that matter every other contributor and their blogging skills is a bit excessive & in your words, bordering on lunacy. To suggest that everyone disagreeing with you are part of the lunatic fringe similiarly borders on lunacy.Don’t you think?
One post criticising Mark. Two posts defending my post against people who seemed to think that
A) I had over-reacted
And
B) ‘obscene’ was a justifiable term to use
I apologised for over-reacting. I stopped responding to the linguistic analysis, seeing as a cage full of gibbons being randomly sprayed with boiling water and sulphuric acid would have made a more sensible noisem
So, what’s with this post? A late entry calling for people to chill out, then starting it up again?
Have you noticed that I didn’t, produce homophobic (or at least misogynistic) nonsense or even worse, use excessive punctuatuon?,
Respond if you like, but I won’t post again on this topic. Life is too short.
