No Vaughan, but another new keeper

By Will 2 years ago, at the end of December Add your comment below

It wasn’t expected that Michael Vaughan would return, but there was almost a feeling of hope that the selectors would relent and call him back for the West Indies. Possibly at the expense of the constantly-underperforming Ian Bell.

It wasn’t to be. The Mumbai attacks prevented Vaughan from having any match practice with England’s performance squad and, as such, it now seems increasingly unlikely that he’ll be able to force his way back into the side for the Ashes. The pressure, then, is firmly back on Bell to actually score some ugly runs when the team most needs it. When the backs aren’t so much against the wall, as holding up the ceiling entirely. All these pretty little 40s are kidding no-one.

So, no Vaughan. But at least we have a new wicketkeeper – another one! – in Steven Davies who will be Matt Prior’s backup for the one-dayers. Tim Ambrose is Prior’s wingman for the Tests so, in all, England have three keepers available for one tour. It’s a trifle over the top.

Then again, given the state of West Indies cricket (Gayle and Chanderpaul aside), England ought not to break sweat.

I think it will be good for Mick Vaughan to sit the carribean series out. I’d like to have seen him captain the Lions to NZ. I am not a big fan of Key’s capataincy nor the man himself. I think Mick Vaughan’s influence on our A side would have been a good one. I also, understand that MV turned down the chance to tour with the Lions deciding to do more nets and find form with Yorkshire.
That I guess is MV’s prerogative, but he should be asked to return the Central Contract monies.
I read today that KP is unhappyt that MV is not in the carribean party- well it’s important for KP to have his team but on this occasion the selectors are spot on.
So on to the carribean batting berths- Bell does need to learn to score ugly and although I do enjoy watching him play in the same way I like MV’s game- it’s time Bell buckled down and fulfilled his potential. I’d start by batting Bell at 5, that is his spot untill he has matured suffiently to bat at 3.
It’s important to give Shah his chance over the entire away and home series vs WI. This should be ample opportunity to guage if Shah is up to test standard- if he fails we can return to MV in time for the Ashes(provided he has form), otherwise we can blood the next crop of pretenders- it won’t be unfair as KP was bloded in the last home ASHES.
I am pleased that Davies has got a carribean berth, feel a little sympathy for Foster but Davies by all accounts is the real deal for the future just as Rashid is.
Selectors need to make Rashid wait for his debhut as long as possible, he is the promising prospect in world cricket and touring and training with the test squad will be part of his cricketing education until he is ready to step up and make his mark.
