‘Traumatised’ England head back to India

By Will 2 years ago, at the start of December Add your comment below

Well, not quite. They’re stopping over at Abu Dhabi to defrost, before arriving in India some time next week. Or later this week. Or (and this is highly unlikely) not at all.

Dominic Cork is always good for a quote or seven, but his sensationalistic words today were a little over-the-top. At least, I hope they were. He claims some of the England players were traumatised by the events in India. In no way am I suggesting the terrorism was anything other than vile, and yes I appreciate India’s television showed the true horror, but were they really traumatised? I hope not, for their sake, because the next couple of weeks are going to be pretty bloody awful for them.

I wonder what effect this will have on the cricket, by both teams. It could degenerate into a bit of a farce, or perhaps have the feeling of a charity match. Let’s just hope that, for once, India can pack the grounds full to bursting and give England a warm and welcoming reception.

And by the by, three cheers to Kevin Pietersen. The past few weeks have been a total nightmare for him and England, yet he’s shown diplomacy, honesty and been almost totally positive about everything. Extra turkey and bread sauce for him this year.

Rest assured, England will be glad they chose to come. The reception they will receive in India will be fabulous and one they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

The quality of cricket might go down a little if some top players don’t play and there is distraction but that is ok – that happens often enough with Bangladesh playing anyway.

And good thing is the first test will be at Chennai – the most sporting and knowledgable cricket crowd in India – they will surely pack the stadium to the rafters to make it an occasion to remember. Unfortunately I can’t claim the same about Mohali.

Finally yes a big thumbs up to Kevin Pietersen. He has been superb through this entire episode and his positive attitude should rub off on the rest of the team.

I guess KP has seen an addition to his fan club ever since he became captain. I am one of them. I am a convert from being a KP hater to being a fan now.

Kevin Peitersen’s popularity in India is higher or as high as shane warne’s.The Indian crowds have taken to him.
He doesn’t start blame -games after the match & generally got a firm round of applause after every game at the presentation ceremony.Ponting could learn a thing or 2.Hayden,my favourite, too can have a teaspoon of what KP’s having.
& It pains me to say this but Good on You ECB.There I just said it.

    Mr.Gaurav,
I agree that Madras is a great test venue & people will flock to the stadiums.I’m pretty sure though that the crowd in Punjab is more sporting.Just not as passionate. Not nearly. But if I learnt my stuff correctly in primary school-Doesn’t Madras have their rainy season right now?

    Will,
(When Oz came recently the Bangalore game was jampacked.South India games are always housefull)

Do you think it wouldn’t have been a farce & like a charity match if the terror attacks wouldn’t have happened?
Terrorism has nothing to do with the quality of cricket & cricketers England produce.
    NZ & SA have won a CT each.Pak has a WC.India has a 20-20 & a 50-50 WC alongwith a CT.Lanka has a CT & a WC.Lets not even talk about Oz & the Windies.
    England??
    Poor lil England.
I’m of the opinion that they’re almost as bad in the test match format too.
    Is that wrong,
    We’ll find out.

I, too, think Pietersen has handled himself well. How the boy has grown up in the past three years.

Hope the Tests go ahead, though dammit we don’t get them on TV here.

Hope the publicity, defiance in the face of terrorism, etc, brings out good crowds to the games.

And let’s hope the word “traumatised” doesn’t get debased further — it’s a bit rich to use it for people who’ve watched something awful on TV, rather than for those who experienced it first hand.
