Lee is a hugely over-rated bowler who would never have found a place in a decent Aus bowling attack. Getting 300 wkts at more than 30 is nothing great. Compare him with Gillespie, the most under-rated star during Australia’s period of dominance. One bad series and that was his end.
Brett Lee: 300 and counting

I have to admit that I never thought he’d get there. Steve Waugh labelled him, unfairly so, as a “once in a generation” bowler, right when he couldn’t control his ludicrous pace. Anyway – a stat attack for you, courtesy of Andrew Miller. Did you know Lee is the only bowler to have taken 300 Test wickets yet has never taken more than five in an innings?
Me neither. Geek-tastic.

Actually I did know that bit of trivia, and that’s one of the reasons why I largely agree with JII. Over the last couple of years Lee has become a very good fast bowler, but when you hear people like Mark Nicholas describing him as a “great” fast bowler then you have to think that he’s a little over-rated. As I said, he’s a very good fast bowler, but forget Lillee, Lindwall and McGrath, is he really any better than Gillespie, McDermott, McKenzie or Lawson? If the latter group had played today they’d all have taken 300 Test wickets.

Lee is a good bowler. His average of over 30 doesn’t make him a poor bowler.Good Averages have to be re-considered in modern cricket.Overrated he might be but that isn’t his fault.
BUT,
I don’t think he’s played in Pakstan.Unfortunately,no1 might play in Pakstan for some time. But those are the flattest wickets in the world without doubt. He got hammered in India.Frankly,he’s quick but not as quick as people make him out to be.
India got a lot of flack for a “defensive” line of attack & field.Lee bowls 3/4rths his deliveries wide out side off stump swinging further away.
Please have a look at McGrath’s figures in the 2004 tour of India. You’ll find out what a great bowler is.
Just dyeing your hair a funny blonde doesn’t make you a “once in a generationer”.
Clark I rate much higer than Lee.Johnson is a fantastic bowler.Without the skill of moving the ball back into the right handers,he’s still a difficult proposition to face.
There are a lot of pacers around the world who’re better than Lee.Pakstan,India,SA even England, even though their direction is pretty poor might have 1 or 2 better guys than him.In fact I was surprised Lee wasn’t dropped in India after Mohali.
Here’s another stat on Lee.10 five fors I believe,7 at home.
Glenn McGrath,Wasim Akram,Kapil Dev,Waqar Younis,Curtly Ambrose etc are greats.
Even Akhtar is better than Lee.

Lee on his day is brilliant. But one thing I cannot fathom, and it makes me want to pull my hair out, is how he manages to bowl so many bloody front foot no balls. I mean the guy has been bowling all his life, trains 5 or 6 days a week, yet still manages to bowl at least 10 no balls an innings.
Also when he gets too fired up, or is looking for a wicket eg wicket 5 against the Kiwis in Adelaide, it seems he loses control and goes back to being the bowler he was when he first came on the scene. Albeit without the pace. It’s enough to drive a bloke mad.

The Stat ie never taken 5 in an innings is amazing!
I rate Brett Lee always have done, he has been wayward in bowling at times but he is a great quick.
Something no one has mentioned here is how good and all-round player he is…. his outfielding is exceptional – he is a top class athlete (a number of top class players could not say the same) and as a batsman he is talented and aggressive capable of scoring runs in most situations.
Lastly but not least it is his enthusiasm and will succeed that puts him above others, he is 120% a fighter and does not know how to quit. Remember the ashes series in England on the last day of the series ‘the Oval test’, the fat was singing and Lee was roaring in. Freddie flintoff acknowledged it and so did a number of others
The all-round package is excellent and as a Cricket Coach I would have Brett in my side every time.
In my opinion Brett Lee in the Top ten all-round cricketers
(Batting, bowling, fielding) of his time.
