Ancient photos. Cricket in Germany, 1942

By Will last year, mid-November Add your comment below

Google has teamed up with LIFE to unveil an incredible amount of photography (free). Obviously, I did the honourable thing by searching for any cricket photos, and there are a few interesting ones. It’s by no means as comprehensive as Hulton or Getty Images, but I enjoyed this photo of cricket being played in Germany in 1942. You’d imagine they were British, but who knows?

And here are C. Aubrey Smith (R), Henry Stephenson (C) and Boris Karloff (L) in 1948, taken by the brilliantly named Loomis Dean:

The real gems lie in their historical coverage. Search for London blitz and you’ll find rare beauties like these:

So, anyway. Have a look and enjoy wasting hours and hours.

Pic1: Surely the fielding time is English. The opposing team batsman’s having a mighty swing and the fielding team is generally getting thulped!

It doesn’t look like a P.O.W. camp, so it’s kind of hard to explain. Maybe there were a few Germans who played cricket.

I remember DCS Foyle in Foyle’s War relling of his experiences playing cricket in Germany, so it must have existed somewhere. Although as Cpatain Mainwaring said in Dad’s Army- “Germans don’t play cricket, Wilson. If they did we wouldn’t be at war in the first place!”

S[eaking of the second ‘photo, I just have to say how much I love the name “Aubrey.” It just sounds great, especially compared to the plethora of truly outlandish names we get nowadays. We could use a few more Aubreys and a few less Starchilds. :)

Damn right. All these idiotic names like Peaches, Fifi, Saturday, Flowerdust, Tallulah, Moxie, Lark are truly horrific. I guess Foyle could be the next first-name on the list :)

If you want to hear a whole heap of great classic English names, look to South Africa! Just looking at their sports figures- you have Ernie Els in golf, Vernon Philander in cricket (plus Mark Vernon Boucher), Percy Montgomery, Victor Matfield and Conrad Jantjies in Rugby Union, and Roland Schoeman, Darian Townsend and Lyndon Ferns in swimming- and I bet I’m not even scratching the surface!

All of them are pretty nice names, yet you have “modern” names being invented probably under the influence of too much weed. Madness, I tell you!

At least we can take comfort in the fact that OUR names are sensible. :)
