India ride their wave

By Will 2 years ago, mid-November Add your comment below

I received a flurry (well, two) emails from someone in India accusing me of racism. This is a weekly event for me, not one I particularly cherish or relish in anticipation, but for once I thought I’d respond. I’ve not posted anything about India’s win over England because I didn’t watch it. If that makes me racist, bigoted or in any way xenophonic, I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise on behalf of the millions of other Britons who couldn’t be arsed to wake themselves up at 3am to watch a predictable drubbing.

My prediction: India will win the first three, then England will storm back to win a couple, the eventual score being 4-3 to India.

As far as the World Champions of Ugliest Cricket Fans go, there has been no question that Australia has been utterly dominant in this field for several decades.

This was not just luck, such consistently despicable racism was due to a comprehensive ground up strategy, where rancour and mutterings about subcontinental chuckers was encouraged at the earliest levels, all the way up to a Prime Minister who delighted in dog whistling to that xenophobic component of the electorate.

All such empires must fall however, and this era of dominance draws to a close. Shadows of it remain, such as Hayden’s recent comments classifying India as a “third world country”, but it is clear that dominating displays of ugly behaviour are no longer the sole province of Australia, and that a challenger has arisen.

India has not merely been satisfied with accruing possibly the best cricket team in modern times, or wield more political and economic power than any other cricketing country. Their fans are starting to not only outdo Australians in terms of racism, they are exceeding them, powered by monstrous chips on both shoulders and the desire to right colonial wrongs.

I believe 2007/2008 was the season in which we saw India wrest the title of Ugliest Cricket Fans from Australia.

Isn’t India (or at least part of it) third world? I mean, obviously it’s going through a boom at the moment and is getting richer by the day (and this will almost certainly continue indefinitely) but from what I’ve seen of it there are still large parts of it that exist in extreme poverty. I don’t think that pointing this out constitutes racism.

It is true that India is third world. But that is not because of the existing poverty. It is because too many people walk around behind the sight screen. This is by far the most accurate quantifier of deciding whether or not a country is third world.

Let me first say as I have many times that Hayden alongwith Sehwag are my favourite Batsman of all time.
Well, technically India is a third world country. But do third world country’s get historic nuclear deals??
People walk around the sightscreens everywhere.
The facilities that australia were treated to in India were amongst the best in the world.CA stated that they would reciprocate the great gesture of “Lalit Modi”.Yes the man you hate so much laid out the red carpet for the Aussies.
Their preparation was the best its been for any tour.
The hotels in India don’t need my reccomendation.
India’s technically 3rd world, but a huge population of the country lives in 1rst world conditions. That chunk of out population is much larger than many australia’s put together.
    Australians were treated like royalty.

Hayden is an all-time great in my eyes but a poor human being. He makes fun of sub-contintal players english.Ishant Sharma is case in point.Called Shoaib Akhtar a B-grade actor & made fun of his accent & english.Sharma is punjabi not Australian.

Here’s the most stupid thing I’ve heard,”Their batsman took a long time to face up.”
Now,its australia who have the regular over rate problem.
What about looking in the mirror Matthew??Who takes the longest time to face up even when the bowler & the fielders alongwith the umpires are ready??Who does akward sit ups chewing on gum like a cow when the bowlers ready to bowl??

BTW,your 4-3 scoreline is not irritating & is a good joke.

4-3 ? I doubt that. the storming back bit is a little far fetched though.By the time India would have sealed the series,Ishant and Tendulkar would be set to return. So the English players can now,in addition to being bludgeoned by Yuvi, get an idea why poor Ponting lies awake at night,in a cold sweat .
i’ll predict a 2-0 in the tests to go with it.
