Bruce Dickinson, master of rock, praises Pietersen

Me and my editor, Andrew Miller, are both unashamed rockers. Colleagues have been known to groan whenever commentators shout “six, six, six” as one or both of us has a habit of ending it with “…the number of the beast!“. Yes, Iron Maiden is where it’s at, and they rock our pants.
And who should Andrew bump into on the tube home today? None other than Bruce Dickinson, Maiden’s lead singer and allround rock legend, sitting anonymously opposite him. Like any good rocker, Miller did the noble thing and introduced himself immediately. Happily, he’s even stuck a quote in to Cricinfo’s (frankly brilliant) QuoteUnquote section:
“I must say, I’m very impressed with that Mr Pietersen. His life story is like Henry IV, V and VI all rolled into one.”
Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer of heavy metal legends, Iron Maiden, believes that England’s new captain … well … rocks
Pietersen rocks. But cricket rocks more. Anyone who’s anyone, wherever they come from and whatever they’re into, tends to surprise you by knowing and loving the great game.
PS: I wonder if Bruce has ever bowled a maiden over.
PPS: Sorry.

Cricket does indeed rock not least an antidote to the constant brainless diet of football, football, football, and yet more football that we have to suffer, even in the summer months.
As for Iron Maiden, although we can do without the type of interlude muzak that spectators had to endure at the Oval test, I’d be happy to hear any of these at an ODI -
Virtual XI (before Bruce’s innings I think)
Flash of the Blade
The Duellists
But perhaps not
Rainmaker
As for the number of the beast, I always thought it referred to the first class wicket haul of one J Agnew…

Henry IV, V *and* VI?
Oh, I see, the man’s a prophet.
First KP usurps Michael “Richard II” Vaughan, then he sweeps all before him (because he can’t tell Sarf Erfikans from Frogs) and finally, next year against the Aussies, he becomes a drivelling loon controlled by his wife.
And I can go back to chanting “England COLLAPSE” and “a beaten side” whilst listening to TMS. I’ve been missing it, to tell you the truth.

Yes, I’m worried about that historical analogy too.

Lying awake at night I wipe the sweat from my brow,
but it’s not the fear, ’cause I’d rather go now,
trying to visualize the horrors that lay ahead,
desert sand mound, a burial ground.
