Speedgun accuracy is “crap” says Harmison

I’ve long eyed the readouts from speedguns with cynical caution. I’m sure Graham Napier is capable of bowling at 90mph, but in his first over, in a Lord’s final, at 93mph? Nope. And if you watch any one-dayer, bowlers’ speeds miraculously gain about 5mph on their average. Perhaps it’s the added energy they give, safe in the knowledge of only bowling a maximum of 10 overs. Or maybe, as is the more likely reason, the speedgun is crap.

Steve Harmison thinks so: “I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It’s crazy. I hadn’t bowled a ball for ten days.”

    Harmison might be right, you never know about the second aspect of every thing.

    There must be a better way to measure the speed of the ball… perhaps adapting Hawkeye to take into account the time between delivery of the ball and it striking the pitch (adjusted for location, of course)?

    Hi guys,how’re all of you.Speed Guns Allright.There was this speesdter competition thath they keep having in india even now.I was 17 & my quickest (amongst 3 deliveres given to us) was 108Kmph ofcourse.So,I think they’re all right considering I thought I should have been slower.There was this kid called Tyagi who was much quicker & younger.He’s in the india A team now.He’s climbing up ,wwatch pout for him.

    I use a speed gun to measure up to 99.9mph in 0.1mph increments at my academies http://www.maverickscricket.com One of the most amazing things is how fast people THINK they bowl when the reality is something QUITE DIFFERENT!

    I teach pace so can help anyone bowl faster…..
