I’d be surprised to see the tournament take place next year. You have to question the relevance of the Champions Trophy given the declining interest in the 50 over game. It’s just another excuse for the ICC to line their pockets.
ICC postpone the rift

For once, common sense has prevailed with the news that the ICC have postponed the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. It will be held in October 2009 at the earliest.
When I put the story up, I was intrigued by the quotes from David Morgan, el presidento. Politically Pakistan is very fragile indeed, and the concerns players have in travelling to such a fractious country are entirely warranted. And instead of cancelling the tournament entirely, which seemed the most likely solution, it’s been postponed to appease Pakistan (and, one presumes, India, who backed the hosts to the hilt).
Morgan and co insist this was no act of appeasement, that the ICC aren’t merely avoiding a bigger issue by pacifying Pakistan. You have to wonder, though, just where this leaves Pakistan’s future as an international country. Australia haven’t been there since 1998. England crap themselves at the very thought of venturing there, and New Zealand, well, they’ve never really enjoyed the whole bombing thing.
The rift between the Asian bloc and other Full Member nations in the ICC is set to widen with each year I fear.

So in the world war that is cricket politics, does this go down as a win to the Non-Asian countries, or as a non-resolved stalemate?

Personally I’m a little dissapointed in the attitudes of the South Africans, English, Australians and New Zealanders. We shouldn’t let these extremists intimidate us.

Sorry, I don’t understand this whole ‘racial split’ business as far as this tournament is concerned. West Indies and South Africa have been opposed to the tournament being held in Pakistan as well. Last I checked, they don’t really belong to the ‘white’ bloc.

I think, when other countries are ready to visit Pakistan, what is the problem with these four countries. If the venue is shifted from pakistan to somewhere else, then it will be bad for pakistan and its image.

While playing in Pakistan is not currently viable, its time to realize that this tournament is a waste of time – and has been replaced by the T20 world cup.
Move on everybody…

Jagadish, there is no “white bloc” as you put it… There is the Asian bloc, and then there is everyone else…
Thats the split.
