    Ambrose demolishes England

By Will 4 months ago Leave a comment on this post

14 years ago to this day, any lingering doubts or reservations I had that cricket had taken me under its spell were emphatically removed. England needed 194 to beat West Indies in the third Test at Port-of-Spain, and in came Curtly Ambrose, bounding up to the crease, arms pumping, gold chains swinging - with a menacing, almost demonic look in his eyes. 19.1 overs later, England were bowled out for 46 and my passion for the game was confirmed, signed, sealed and dated. Even now, if I catch a glimpse of that spell in Trinidad, I am fairly awestruck.

Bizarrely, I’ve just remembered it’s my grandmother’s birthday too. She’d have been 108!

I remember that night. I was laughing at a friend who supported Blackburn Rovers, who were also getting a beasting. That was back in the day when Radio 5 broadcast the commentary, and you could catch coverage easily. I used to walk about with a Coca Cola radio, listening in class, in the streets, at lunch, in restaurants, in bed throughout the night. None of this LW crap, or restricted access. Great memories.

What a bowler Ambrose was. I always wished Steve Harmison could bowl like him.

He sure was a great bowler. I’ve always wondered who was better Ambrose or Walsh? I suppose Walsh as he did take more wickets.

But Walsh played many more games. Ambrose had a better economy, average and strike rate, plus the handy X-factor of being able to run through teams in a very short space of time.

An awesome spell. I was at university where there was no issue of managing time zones or responsibilities to watch Test cricket. You just did.

Ambrose’s first wicket set the tone, trapping Atherton in front. He carried the England side on his back then, and even at 0-1 with crowd going mental, what happened next felt inevitable. It was certainly deserved. Ambrose on fire in the Caribbean was a special sight.
