"It's pretty humbling, isn't it? For an old fisherman and surfer in Queensland, who now and then plays a bit of cricket." Matthew Hayden is overwhelmed at being Usain Bolt's favourite cricketer Aug 21, 2008
There is no longer any point castigating Steve Harmison for his continued failures. He is what he is, and we will probably never be privy to exactly what his problems are. No. It’s time he was sent back to Durham and left to bowl - assuming he is selected - while England look to the next generation. There is only so much a business - for that is what cricket has now become - can invest in their employees without benefiting in return for all their patience and money.
It’s no longer even frustrating. This is a sad, worrying situation that one of England’s most gifted professional sportsmen can’t cope with his job. That he told Allan Donald he was “scared” last summer makes you wonder just how he has managed to stay in professional cricket for so long.
I found myself explaining to my 17 month old daughter this afternoon, that there was once an England team, a long long time before she was born, that regained the Ashes from Ricky Ponting one summer not due to superior skill, but 100 days of incredible determination and adamantine team spirit.
I agree, it is no longer frustrating, it was frustrating when you beleived that he was capable of bowling like he did but was just in the wrong mind set, that feeble mind set won’t move, he has dug himself a huge hole and can’t get a grip on the rope leading up.
It is also time to get rid of this ridiculously long tail, judging by Wellington’s wicket, you would have to put Broad in the team, despite in my opinion Anderson being the better bowler, otherwise stick Swann in at 8.
I’m in agreement with Will, it’s quite sad to see how someone who, a few years back, was truly awesome has been reduced to bowling 80mph and being carted all over by NZ. Worrying to see what the strength in depth is in the pace dept. A recall for Andy Caddick?!
