New Zealand v England, 1st Test, Hamilton

Ah, Test cricket. We welcome it back with open arms, albeit wiping the sleep from our eyes as we prepare to reverse our body clocks in the pursuit of sport and entertainment. Still – it could be worse (it could be 12 months ago when we were weeping our way through the depression of the Ashes) and England have an excellent chance of gaining an upper hand over New Zealand.
Of course, New Zealand can never be written off or dismissed entirely. Like a particularly hardy breed of mosquito, they’re rather hard to swat; what they lack in quality they more than make up for in grit and a never-say-die attitude. However, with the absence of Shane Bond – who’s deserted them for the wallet-swelling lure of the Indian Cricket League – New Zealand’s attack looks flimsy at best; only Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin can boast 50 Test wickets to their name. That is a worryingly weak statistic.
So do chat away. We’ll be doing all we can at Cricinfo to a) stay awake during the inevitable rain delays and b) keep you amused on commentary, so keep an eye on us. I’ll leave this open for the Test for you night owls to dissect the teams’ performances.

I think that an England series win is inevitable but I hope NZ compete. The last thing test cricket needs is fewer teams.
At least they’ve started well, 87-1 at lunch.

The pitch is awful. I’m afair that this is going to be a draw.

Harmisson bowled well, didn’t he? We ought to give the bugger a new nickname: Stephen ‘Accuracy’ Harmisson.

I don’t think you can write off NZ at home (of course, away, you have to write them off), but some of the greener tops might be familiar to the English players than other teams that have toured.
That said, England have gotta fire at some point…
…right?
…RIGHT? :O

What is it about New Zealand cricket that everyone always looks down on them? Especially the English, but I see the Indians are imitating them now ( NZ is still ranked higher on the ODI list than India, you know). Okay, this is Test Cricket, and NZ have lost some great players recently, this oh ‘Of course, New Zealand can never be written off or dismissed entirely’ and patting them on the head for showing grit shows distinct lack of respect for a country with an absolutely miniscule population to draw from, compared to the vast hordes in England and India. And they aren’t afforded the superstar treatment and salaries like the pampered cricketers of those countries, either.
As I write, NZ are 7 – 446. Not bad for a bunch of mosquitoes.

Also nice to see Test Cricket again, by the way, after the circus that was being passed off as cricket in Australia. And Strauss back in his place.
All out for 470 – a quality score, I think, Will.

Can anybody out there help me please. My husband attend the first day test match at Hamilton and in the hospitality package was given an England Cap. Unfortunately somebody in San Francisco decided they wanted it and removed it from his bag. If anybody knows where I can purchase another one can they please get in touch.
