"I think their minds were already on the plane home. I am just not sure they were here to play today."
Jamie Siddons on Bangladesh's performance in the last league match of the Asia Cup Jul 4, 2008
There is yet more evidence of the power that the BCCI wield, and the influence of the Asian bloc, with the news that the Indian board have bluntly warned Australia not to pull out of their tour of Pakistan. What right do they have to “warn” Australia? Not a lot, you would think. After all India is only one of ten members. But such is their immense financial clout, they will always get support from the Asian bloc (and support any Asian country who, in the BCCI’s opinion, need it) and Zimbabwe, West Indies and South Africa are easily swayed to help give India a 7-3 majority.
BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said Australia would face major repercussions if it abandoned the six-week tour, due to begin mid-March.
“There will be serious consequences because you can’t just pull out a committed tour when the host board is giving you assurances about security and so is the government,” he said.
“If the host board and government is willing to give assurances, you have to accept that you can’t just cancel a confirmed FTP tour,” he said.
A deeply worrying development. Cricket is as unstable now as it has ever been, and I have absolutely no idea where it will all end up in five, 10, 20 years. Asian bloc v the rest? You wouldn’t bet against it.
Apart from the repercussions of having India bossing everbody around; how can they assure the safety of the Australians in a country over which they have no control? What, you can ask, will happen if CA gives in and their team is the target of an attack? Will the BCCI be responsible?
I think not, so I really don’t think they should interfere in matters out of their actual control.
It seems that India are looking ahead to expand cricket, while England and others are hanging back and wringing their hands.
I am sympathetic with the wish to reduce the amount of international cricket to improve standards; but in a contest between those who want to increase the amount of international cricket including income and salaries - and others who want to reduce the amount of cricket including income and salaries - it is easy to see who will win…
India are testing the market - nobody knowns how big cricket can get until it is too big.
I’m guessing that there’s a lot of TV revenue to be lost in India if Australia don’t tour Pakistan, and the BCCI are in the business of making money rather than managing cricket. Just like EVERY national board is. Let’s not forget Cricket Australia locking out journalists for not agreeing to CAs demands at the beginning of the summer. This is about money, not cricket.
Considering India just lost an unloseable game to Australia, perhaps the BBCI need to look less at bullying and more closely at the way their team actually plays. They can throw their weight around all they like, but their team still isn’t matching their mouth.
And how did you like Dhoni’s dummy spit when his own teammate got him run out. And publicly criticizing his players at the presentation! Such gentlemanly behaviour! What a model of sportsmanship!
It’s just a token public statement from the BCCI….behind closed doors they are on the phone to every current Australian player offering them megabux to play in the IPL. If you think the Australians are off their game at the moment, imagine how they would be playing in Pakistan, where the elections have just finished with a fusillade of suicide bombers. The Australian Government has issued advice to Australian passport holders not to travel to Pakistan and no Australian player is going to leap over a huge bucket of cash to ignore them.
It was innapropriate for the BCCI to issue that statement in the first place, but it’s not as if they threatened CA themselves. All they said was that they risked incurring a fine if they violated the FTP, which is true.
Personally, I think they should tour. Yes, it is possible that something could happen over there (although nothing’s happened to anyone else). It is also possible that something could happen at the Olympic Games. Or when Australia plays soccer in Iraq later this year. Should we just abandon all international sporting events, because something might possibly happen? Because if we do that, then we just let the terrorists and extremists win.
On a different tack, has anyone noticed that the scores in the tri series currently going on at the mo, have been a lot lower than most games in recent times, and as a result, the games have been a lot more exciting and watchable. Not really related to this thread, but with the previous lamenting over cricket now being a batsmens game, good to see the bowlers having some time in the sun.
Yes, very good. I think India currently have the best fast bowling attack that they’ve ever had, and it’s good to see that Sri Lanka’s fringe bowlers are doing well too.
Rusty:
Dhoni is an honest man , he said what was on his mind.I don’t think you need to be concerned about the indian captain. You have to find replacements for hayden, gilchrist & ponting. All the others are in their early 30’s.Even the experienced players in the indian team are young. You have tough times ahead. We’ve won some unwinnable matches as well.Considering it’s a young team & that they didn’t have the better conditions to play in you can excuse them once.
Also if rajiv shukla expresses his personal opinion on a channel your paranoid media is quick to pounce on it.
The BCCI didn’t throw it’s weight around at all.Isn’t it a fact that you will suffer consequences if you pull out of a tour.
Does the australian team have special rights. He just stated a fact.I’m sure if asked the same question CA officials will respond in a similiar manner by saying that they’re aware of the consequences. Why this insecurity??
I think australian team is continuosly resorting to sissy behaviour.First, they complain to umpires when some1 gives it back.Second they complain about the postponement of the verdict , third, they complain about the verdict of an independent judge, fourth they complain about theior own boards’s sponsorshi issues, 5..6…7..8..9..10…the list goes on .What a bunch of squealers. If india after having fought 3 wars with pakistan can tour 4 years after the kargil war , i don’t see an reason for australia to pull out. They don’t have any political significance in pakistan , why would they be targeted?Ignorance is the primary issue here.
& whoever thinks the BCCI is assuring safety of australians in pak is clearly retarded. They stated that pak was assuring safety.Considering the crap the australian board has given to the BCCI on sponsorship, it was very polite.I wonder why no1 makes an issue when Their board wants to have their exclusive sponsors. That is the most ridiculous stuff, i’ve heard.
Lets see what happens in india if you manage to win the tri series.I suggest you start thinking of excuses right away.
Well, at least there is now going to be a tour of a sort. Great news, as it’s a triumph of common sense, trust and balls. They should NOT be intimidated. I only hope that what gets sent is very close to a first-string side.
An honest Indian? That’s like saying there are humble Australians!!
which planet do you live on? Or do you have a problem with understanding English? Or politics . Or life in general. I know many Indians live in a perpetual state of self-delusion. Poor thing, you must be one of them.
self-delusion is a big word to use for a guy with such a small brain. How old are you??Clearly you don’t warrant a response. But I shall give you some suggestions anyway.
I used to think that you were a gibbering idiot. Now, after reading your latest post, I have a much lower opinion of you. You’re just another racist Internet-addicted idiot suffering from diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the mind. However, I’ll consider letting you have the last word if you guarantee it will be your last.
I see the holy Dhoni has now had his gloves declared illegal - of course, a wicket-keeper of his experience couldn’t possibly have known that extra webbing might not be “in the spirit of cricket”. Like Shoab Akhtar pretending amazement when he ‘discovers’ that drugs are illegal in sport.
What’s India’s next diversionary ploy? Or is it just that they just can’t bear not being the focus of attention? Is their’s a case of perpetual ADHD? I await the next outbreak with with bated breath.
“Dhoni an honest man…” Was he honest last year in the World Cup claiming a catch or Pieterson that bounced about 3 miles in front of him?
Is he always honest when calling “Catch it” everytime an opposition batsmen hits the ball, even when it is blocked straight into the ground?
Was he ‘an Honest man” when he clearly used an illegal pair of gloves - custom made I might add - to dismiss Gilchrist with?
Let’s face it, Dhoni is a bloody cheating dog like the rest of the Indian cricket team, including Tendulkar. Jesus, does Tendulkar ever walk when he knows he’s out? You Indian’s cried like babies when Symonds didn’t walk in Sydney yet Tendulkar edged one of Lee in the Perth test and didn’t walk, Edged one in the One Day clash with Australia and didn’t walk, stepped on his stumps and didn’t walk - I don’t know who he thought knocked the stumps over? In fact the Indians have cheated, sooked and blackmailed their way through the summer simply because they don’t want to accept that they are bloody useless.
Now you Indian gentlemen are again crying like little girls and threatening to take your bat and ball and go home if Sharma isn’t let off. Please, piss off back to India and play Pakistan, Zimbabwe and the West Indies all year long, who cares???????? You all suck at cricket anyway.
The Indians might be buying players for the IPL but you can’t buy the one thing you really want and that’s a half descent cricket team or a test series win. Go home and have a sook, cricket will be much better without you!!!
It’s an interesting one as to whether he had finished playing the shot or not. I thought that because he was jumping back as he played the shot, his landing, which was where his foot touched the stumps, would have been included as part of the shot. Sort of similar to the dismissal which got Aggers going, you know the “couldn’t quite get his leg over” one.
He was out, he knew he was out, and yet he wouldn’t go. Not saying he has to coz that’s the ump’s job. But when India went on a effigy burning rampage and accused Australia of being cheats and not playing in the spirit of the game then it’s a bit rich for them not to hold Tendulkar to account.
As for Dhoni…He’s a dead set cheat!
Here’s sopmthn interesting.Dhoni’s gloves are made by the same guy who makes gilchrists gloves. He says tehy arethe same.Gilchrist buys his gloves in australia but they’re made by the same guy in india. He’s used those gloves all his life.Ian healy needs to concentrate on australians & not indians for a change.
If he calls catch it every timesome1 hits it to the ground what difference does it make.I know a lot of keepers who say that in reflex even when the ball is going to land in a vacant area.Like I said piss off.
