    Under-19 World Cup

By Will 7 months ago Leave a comment on this post

My colleague in Bangalore, George Binoy, is at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. It’s always fascinating keeping an eye on which teams (Pakistan are always strong: they had India 9 for 6 two years ago) do well, and identifying future international prospects. Keep an eye on his tour diary and the usual comprehensive brilliance of Cricinfo.

I follow the u/19 results more to see how good the talent pools are in minnow nations. Trying to pick future stars is nigh-on impossible, as The List makes pretty clear - only five of the top 20 run-scorers have had substantial international careers, and similarly for the bowlers.

Seeing minnows do well gives them hope for the medium-term future, though. Nepal in particular does well at u/19 level, often beating Test nations. If they all stick at it they should eventually get a good senior side together.
