  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

    Alert to all statto geeks

By Will last year, at the end of December Leave a comment on this post

If you’re even remotely interested in cricket, chances are that there’s a lurking geek within you. Don’t worry - we’ve all got it and flaunt it. I notice that Cricinfo’s new statsguru, which has been under wraps for ages, has been let loose on you ‘orrible lot. It is a thing of total, unabashed brilliance…where you can find out such must-have things as the best five-fors conceding 10 runs or less, or spinners who have opened the bowling on the first day of a Test match.

Pub quiz masters: go forth and splutter.

I was just using the standard stats guru to figure out a hunch I had; Ponting has just been dismissed for 3 and after his 4 in the first innings I am quite certain it’s the first time he has failed twice (scores under 10) in both innings of a Test in a long, long time.

I believe the last time was the 2nd Test against India in 2001, played at Eden Gardens, where he was dismissed for scores of 6 and 0.

Aha! Cricinfo took my feedback and posted it without giving credit to it’s source! Tut tut :)

Just to continue, the last time Ponting got single figures was also against India, 6 & 0 in the 2nd Test in Kolkata, way back in 2000-01. India have been revived by these two wickets, they’ve got a spring in their step now

That’s pretty impressive. I did a query on average runs per partnership by wicket: http://tinyurl.com/yw3pxx

The only problem is that I could not sort by wicket number.

Also, to make it truly geeky, there must be a REST API so that uber-geeks can build their own applications which query the database and use the results in ways that CricInfo would not have thought of.
