    Christmas cricket

By Will last year, at the end of December Leave a comment on this post

Now that England’s misery has been put on hold until the New Zealand series in 2008, attention turns to the southern hemisphere. It’s probably the first Christmas for 10 years that I’ve not had Sky to watch Boxing Day Tests, so I was a bit peeved when I woke up this morning to see what a good day India had enjoyed against Australia at Melbourne. Peter English:

Groups of Australians spent the afternoon wondering whether they were being unpatriotic for smiling when India started running through the home team. For the first session those local supporters who demand nothing but dominance by Ricky Ponting’s men were satisfied with the direction of the game. Their disgruntlement when it changed in the second session was offset by the joy felt - and heard - at the ground by cricket supporters who are desperate to see Australia challenged. After the first day there is hope this series might be the fair fight fans have been craving since the 2005 Ashes.

It promises to be a cracking series between the best two sides in the world. Whether it will match or better the 2005 Ashes is impossible to predict (and unlikely, I’d imagine) but any team who can challenge Australia gets my vote of confidence. Even if it is India…

Several thousand miles away in Port Elizabeth, West Indies have raced to 190 for 3 on the first day against South Africa, with Chris Gayle launching a terrific 66 from just 49 balls. Have a read of his innings - he took Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn apart. Brilliant stuff and I can’t wait to see the video.

It’s been a day of the underdogs all around, except perhaps for Bangladesh. I have actually read blogs which ask if it weren’t the other way around between BD and the Kiwis.

Samuels and Chanders need to hold it till at least a bit past lunch tomorrow. That’ll be asking a lot of Samuels and why Chanders’ presence is so important to keep shepherding the team on. The test could turn out to be very interesting if WI do actually go into the final session tomorrow still batting.

India, on the other hand have achieved only a small portion of their purpose. They’ll have to wind it all up quickly tomorrow and go on to the biggest task of batting Australia out of this test. Because, if it does mean that India will have to bat again in this test match, things could get very dicey indeed. There could be uncomfortable rough for Hogg to exploit caused by the left arm seamers. Kumble and Harbhajan may have a less useful patch to bowl into at the four significant left handers in the Australian team because of the unorthodox over the wicket run up of the left arm bowlers.

    Hinges upon tomorrow.

Do people really think of India as the second best test team now?

I suppose with SA, England, SL and now India all visiting Australia within a year we may get an accurate reflection of their relative abilities.

We’ll have a better idea about India’s true strength when the
current series is over. India definitely had a better day yesterday. Whether they can repeat this is the question.

In my view India is the second best batting side in the world. However, when it comes to bowling, I guess there are a few teams ahead of them. For example England assuming they can get Flintoff, Harmison, Hoggard fit and bowling together with Panesar would be a better blowing combination. Also, South Africa, and Pakistan with Aktar and Asif fit would be better bowling sides.

Is Peter English kidding? What you heard around the ground was not the sound of unpatriotic Australians. You only had to listen to every run scoring stroke of the Indian’s to realize that there were a lot of Indian’s in the crowd. They’re the reason for the festivities of the day 1 season…

“but any team who can challenge Australia gets my vote of confidence. Even if it is India…”. Except for SA(where we did win a test),we’ve managed to win or draw every other test series in the last few years.Indian losses would be a 1-0 loss to pak in pak, & a 2-1 loss to aus at home where 1 wicket was completely australian.Shut your insolent mouth & show respect.

Quite clearly it’s AS Gill.Secondly, i asked u to show respect towards the indian cricket team. But on second thoughts it was wrong of me to expect that from you.I’m assuming you have australian roots.Maybe that is a racist comment.Ban me.If common sense were dynamite you wouldn’t have enough to blow your nose.Go continue to live in dreamland little ‘willy’.
