As secretary of a club in Dublin, I regularily get emails from all sorts looking to come to Ireland to play cricket. Of course most are looking to be paid, or at least get jobs and accommodation….

The vast majority of Pakistanis have played for the Pakistan Under 19 team, and they are all mentored by someone from the test team. They are all all rounders and great fielders too…

The best of all was the one Pakistani looking to be paid to play who freely admitted he had not played for the U19 team. That was because he was 9 (yes, nine) years of age. I kid you not….

The prankster in me would put together a detailed reply, showing interest, giving the guy hope, leading him on, and see how far it goes, like those guys who reply to the bank scam emails.

I sometimes get questions like these through my site.

The way I deal with it is to pass them on to a friend at a cthe CricX cricket agency (one that places players with UK and Aussie clubs).

He tells me that he has only had 1 serious enquiry through me though despite passing on at least 20!

Obviously you chaps didn’t see Barcelona CC win the La Manga Cricket Club 20/20 tournament a couple of months ago. Barcelona CC is fairly new, but Madrid Cricket Club was founded in 1975 - I know because I was there!! It was based on British and Indian players, but soon crossed other national lines when West Indians and eventually Spanish members joined.

There are now Spanish Northern and Southern leagues. 1996 saw Spain accepted as a member of the European Cricket Federation, and the sport is increasingly taught in schools.

I suggest Salman contact Khalid Shabaz at ks185@hotmail.com. According to Cricket Espana’s website, he is the Barcelona CC contact.

I liked the topic of discussion in a blog meant to discuss cricket, that too Engaland’s performance in TEST cricket when England are losing a TEST series 2-0. I noticed the same thing when England lost its home series to India. Maybe, it’s ok to lose to all other teams as long as England regains the Ashes next time. A letter of acceptance from a cricket team is often enough to get someone into the country. Even Eastern European cricket teams are flooded with requests.

I wonder if cricket clubs in Pakistan receive letters from British (or Spanish) kids, claiming to represent their U19s.

Thanks for the genuine info on Barcelona CC. One of our Montreal players just moved there, and he is looking for a club, so I will pass on the info.

Yes, he tried for many months to come to the sub continent and he finally got a chance. So despite what the majority of you think their are 100’s of English cricketers now trying to get a club to sponsor them in Sri Lanka. Not everyone has economic migration in mind. but they all want the opportunity to play cricket.
