  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

MCC ‘more human, not so aloof and distant’

By Will last year, mid-December Leave a comment on this post

Mike Atherton meets Mike Brearley, the former England captain who was named as MCC’s new president in May. In a wide-ranging piece, Brearley looks ahead to the future - and Atherton is convinced the MCC could not be in safer hands:

“The appointment of Keith Bradshaw [the Tasmanian chief executive of the MCC] could not have happened 20 years ago. He’s very forward-thinking and keen to keep Lord’s and the MCC relevant. In short, the MCC has become, I think, more obviously human, not so aloof and distant.”

Excellent choice by Insole, almost but not quite making amends for his inglorious role in the d’Oliviera affair (before you were born, Will…)

So who will the Ayatollah pick when it’s his turn?

Whenever I’ve spoken to any MCC members (I make sure I wash thoroughly afterwards…) they all rave about ‘Michael’ Brearley and his exemplary captaincy of the England side - bemoaning the fact that things started going downhill when oiks like Gooch and Gatting became skipper.

Ironic thing is that Brearley is probably the most liberal person ever to skipper England and holds views that would make the average ‘blood and pus’ tie wearer splutter into his Gin and Tonic.
