    Udal lured out of retirement

By Will last year, at the start of December Leave a comment on this post

Jamie Dalrymple, the England allrounder, left Middlesex for Glamorgan two weeks ago. You might think that Middlesex would have cast their net to scoop a like-for-like. Instead they’ve persuaded (persistently) Shaun Udal, the 38-year-old former England and Hampshire offspinner, to join them. For two years.

    Yes, quite.

In other news, Muralitharan broke the world record for highest number of test wickets, and Kumar Sangakkara became the first batsman in the history of test cricket to score 150 or above in four consecutive matches.

But such news is trivial in comparison to Shaun Udal - gasp! - coming out of retirement. Oh my God. Stop the press!

Presume that Middlesex tried John Emburey first but then decided to go for a youth policy.

Well done to Muralitharan and Sangakkara, excellent cricketers that they are. Any chance of either playing for Essex next season? They’d have to fight for selection with Tim Phillips and Varun Chopra, but I reckon they might get the odd game.

Theena, with all due respect, you try working 50 hours in five days, at horrible hours, and construct something lively on a blog after each day. It’s not easy, so I choose to say nothing rather than waffle inanely.

Its just a reflection on the decline of off spin, if you’re a young off spinner coming into the game now- you’ve got to be exceptional.

I don’t know about that Ernold. It seems every country now has an up-and-coming finger-spinner who bowls in the traditional style, if he’s not already established. Australia has Dan Cullen and Aaraon Heal, South Africa has Paul Harris, Zimbabwe has Prosper Utseya, England has Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann, India has Ramesh Powar, Dan Vettori’s still going strong for New Zealand and Bangladesh has three or four. I think orthodox spin is one of the traditional skills
