  • I think those speed guns are a load of crap. Somehow the white ball goes faster - I bowled 83-84mph in the Test match, and 93mph in the one-dayers. It's crazy. I hadn't bowled a ball for ten days.

    England win a one-day series

By Will last year, mid-October Leave a comment on this post

Even I, an insufferable cynic of one-day cricket, had to be impressed by England today. In fact, they have been the better team all series. Athletic in the field, imaginative and flexible with the ball, generally industrious with the bat and captained sensibly by Paul Collingwood.

Your thoughts on the match and series? Is this the turning point or were Sri Lanka caught napping in light of being Muraliless?

England were playing Sri Lanka? I thought the world was currently revolving aroun Australia, India and Darrell Hair. ;-p

Muraliless or not, I think it has been a very good performance. England itself was Flintoffless… I hope it marks the beginning of some kind of one-day resurgence of the English team. It’s a pity seeing a damn good test side, turn into a distinctly average ODI side the next day.

It seems to me that after the first game where Sri Lankan batting looked quite good, it was their bat and English ball that lost and won the series respectively. You can’t score such low totals and expect to win even with Murali in your side.

I’m guilty of hardly paying attention but it seems that Swann, Broad and Sidebottom ought to take a bow for their roles in securing the series for the Poms.

On page 20 of the Wisden Cricketer, October 2007 issue:

Best bet: Sri Lanka to win one-day series 4-1.

    Oops!

There’s also a contest to guess who will take the most wickets for England in the series. If it turns out to be Swann, I can’t imagine anyone will win.

I quite liked the look of Swann. How many traditional offies do you see nowadays who give it plenty of flight and plenty of rip, and damn the consequences? Basically him and Ramesh Powar. I enjoy watching adventurous spin bowling far more than I enjoy defensive, run-saving tactics that rarely work in the first place.

A really strange series. I thoroughly enjoyed it but the rest of my friends can only talk of the rugby. My Sri Lankan friends refuse to talk about it at all.

It amused me as a scorer that the winning run was a leg-bye. I wonder how many games have been won with an extra…?

Congratulations to England on a rare and hard earned victory.

Sidebottom, Anderson and Swann were my picks.

Swann’s selection needed some foresight and courage for he actually replaced Monty.

Are we going to see some more enthusiasm for the limited over game now? (wink) It’s been a season to celebrate and support your one-day team!
