this blog seems to be focusing more and more on anything vaguely related to cricket, other than the current cricket matches themselves.
Justin Langer is Batman

Local news programmes are always hilariously glib, but tonight’s thrill-a-minute Spotlight - the South West’s primary form of entertainment, now ahead of incest - provided a gem when they referred to Justin Langer as the former Australian Batman.
Well, it’s more flattering than Gnome I suppose.

That’s because I’m still on holiday and haven’t watched a single game of the tournament, I’m afraid

Allow me to assist. Tonight is actually looking like a cracker with the Aussies and Lankans fighting for a place in the semi’s and India needing more of last nights’ fireworks to get up over the Africans. If India lose they are gone. If they win it looks like NZ will be gone on lesser NRR. Poor kiwi’s, they’ve really earned a semi I feel.
Australia is looking like they are still awaking from hibernation and Sri Lanka has not been as impressive in the 2nd stage of the tourny than they were in the 1st.
My picks:
Australia def Sri Lanka in a surprisingly lopsided game.
South Africa too good for India, mostly because they bowl a lot better than Stuart Broad.

That’s alright, Will, you enjoy your holiday. Michael will take over!
First, Kiwis to go on to the semis, especially if Australia go out. South Africa look like the likely winners at this point, esp. since they have home advantage.
You’re very hopeful about Australia’s chances, Michael, but the team doesn’t have good record without Punter at the helm.
And I think Sri Lanka will want payback for that defeat in the World Cup, too. A lot of their fans still think they got the short straw in the final and wuz robbed. The team may think the same, no matter how pleasant Jayawardene was at the presentation.

Sri Lanka still need to show up.
And so far (it’s weird for me to say so) we are not so reliant on Punter in T20 as we are in the proper formats. Gilchrist is a more than capable leader and only needs to do so for about an hour. Also, Gilchrist as captain has an 11-4 ODI record and a 4-1-1 Test record. Not too shabby if you ask me…
In fact, Gilchrist only needs to bat for 20 minutes to put a result beyond doubt. As he did in the World Cup. Come on now, Australia smashed them and anyone thinking otherwise is really grasping at straws…

It’s about the bowlers, too, though. Clark was good the other day but Bracken, Lee and Johnson weren’t tight enough. And I heard Roy was a disaster, though I didn’t watch that bit! Funnily enough, it was at the same ground where we had that massive loss to SA after totalling the biggest ODI score ever. That was the match when everyone decided Clark wasn’t good for the shorter form of the game. Maybe that’s what spooked them, the memories……..

Well… being “batman” is a lot better than a being a lot of other people… Stuart Broad included. And as far as Ind-SA match goes… I betcha that there will be 2 spinners. And India has to bowl phenomenally well to win this one.
BTW… cool site… ![]()

Oh God! they’ve brought Watson in to the team! What faith they have in him! Hasn’t played for yonks and dropped into the do-or-die match.
Can his hamstring make it through 20 overs? Prove me wrong, Shane, make me eat my words!
September 20th, 2007 at 9.58 am
I reckon they should bring Hogg in. Shuffle everyone up 1 in the order and slot him in after Lee. Hogg’s not too bad at getting the ball away and his spin is a good option as just about no-one in international cricket can read his wrong’un.

75-7… what did I predict?
September 20th, 2007 at 10.30 am
I knew it! Watson’s hamstring just couldn’t take the pace. Why they don’t use Hogg is beyond me. He was something like the 2nd top bowler in the WC. Like Chris says, no-one can read him.

It’s time to be done with Watson though. I only wear one eye and it’s green and gold in colour but even I am tiring of the bloke’s hamstring…

Well, Rusty, I guess you won’t be eating words anytime soon. Why they think he’s worth more to the team than Hogg is a mystery. One of them’s an okay bat an an ordinary bowler who breaks down more often than a Soviet-built tractor, the other’s a crafty left-arm spinner and electric fielder who’s been one of the best limited-overs bowlers in the last five years. Go figure.

101…. thats a walk in the park… Looks like Australia is gonna meet India (hopefully) [:)]
September 20th, 2007 at 11.54 am
I think it will be Sth. Africa next, though India might be easier.
I’m sorry to see Sri Lanka go out on such a low, though. & Gilchrist and Hayden hogging the limelight again and no batting for the others. I know I’m carping, but why can’t Australia play normal, well-rounded games? And still win, of course ![]()

yeah… i guess it will be SA… no point in wishing for India to defeat SA (if they defeat them at all) like Australia have defeated Sri Lanka. And Sri Lanka doesnt really have any power hitters except Jayasuriya. Even so… a 150 target should have been on. And methinks others not getting batting actually spurs them on to latch on to opportunities to bat when hayden and gilchrist let them have one. Its a bloody relentless task bowling against aussies.

Sri Lanka doesn’t have any hitters? Why then do they keep smashing the record for most runs in a limited over format?
Rusty - For me a 10-wicket win is a completely dominating, well rounded game. You won’t find Australia messing around with it’s order or plans in the business end of a tournament. We save the playing around for the less important matches. We also get criticized for that. Funny game. Funny media. Most of the time they know don’t know sh*t from clay.

The Australia-Sri Lanka match was hardly well-rounded. It was a completely one-sided rout. It wasn’t even a well-rounded Australian performance, since most of them didn’t get to bat - again. Will that come to bite us against India? Michael, I do think you are a little on-eyed about supporting Oz sometimes, though it is endearing :-), (though probably not to Aussie-haters).
