Zimbabwe beat Australia- again!

By Scott 3 years ago, mid-September Add your comment below

Zimbabwe beat Australia the first time that they met in a World Cup match, back in 1983. In 2007, they’ve repeated the dose by beating Australia in their first Twenty-20 World Cup match. I know that the players aren’t taking it too seriously, but I didn’t know they were taking it THAT unseriously. Mind you, Zimbabwe probably played very well too. (I didn’t see the game)

I saw some game and the Aussies looked very out of form. Probably still recovering from ICC awards night and 6 months off.

Or was it the new uniforms? Perhaps they backfired? Or the boys didn’t feel their usual selves ? Are these outfits the future of cricket? It looks like they decided that, since they always wear their Skins underneath anyway, why not make that their uniform and dispense with the shirt. What happens when they get too hot – down to their body suits? Channel 9 commentator Mark “Tubby” Taylor, looked suitable aghast at what the modern Australian cricketer is expected to wear.

I watched the whole thing thanks to the magic of the internet and sopcast :)

Australia were out of form, but it wasn’t just that.

Zimbabwe bowled really sensibly, fielded out of their skins, and just made life really difficult for Australia.

Then when Zimbabwe batted, the extra speed of the Australian bowlers really helped them. Ponting miscalculated badly by giving Hodge another over, and realistically having Hogg in the team probably would have been a good idea.

Zimbabwe played really really really well. They completely deserved their win, and it wasn’t just Australia playing terribly.

Zimbabwe played beautifully and thoroughly deserved their win. The players kept saying what a morale boost it would be for the people back home but I’m hoping it’s not a morale boost for Mugabe too.

Much as I enjoy seeing Australia get beaten, I had some sympathy with a clearly irritated Ponting, who sent the cameraman away when he was talking to his team huddle before Australia started fielding. I’ve noticed the camera intruding right into team huddles this year and I think it’s just plain rude. Give them a bit of space and privacy for God’s sake.

I read somewhere today that this result is just as much bad news for England as it is for Australia, which is quite true. Makes it quite an interesting group.

Brilliant from Zimbos. Some top class bits of fielding to dismiss the likes of Ponting, Hussey and Symonds surely won them the day. If one of those batsmen had been given another chance, it would have been a plucky loss rather than a sensational win.
Australia can have no excuses, especially as they pride themselves in giving everything whenever they wear green and gold. Or even skin-tight grey and yellow.

Zimbabwe looked Aussie in every way. It was a role reversal…but Australia need not lose heart; since that ‘83 match, they’ve progressed very well.

    Soulberry,

I don’t know how Zim looked Aussie in ”every way”-noticeable lack of players of any colour other than white amongst the Australians, except Roy. But yes, Oz having been improving – unlike England. ( Have you moved over from 606? too rough and rude for you there or are you just branching out?)

    Kathy,
I also hate to think what mileage Mugabe will get out of this victory. If only for that reason I grudge Zim the victory.

I don’t know Rusty. All but two Zimbabweans were black, and all but one Australian was white, which is almost an exact reversal. All we needed was another black player, and the two teams would have been a mirror image of each other!

I wouldn’t be concerned about Mugabe. Reasonable people will realise that this victory had zilch to do with the government, and those who are unreasonable will doubtless support Mugabe whether Zimbabwe won this match or not.

Well IM Zimbabwean an I LOVE the fact the fact that the guys have given us a reason to feel good about Zimbabwe and some good news from home – Mugabe will do whatever he wants regardless!

Rusty, I’m still at 606. Not too active.

Sometimes rough yes, but there are a nice bunch of cricket fans there from different countries. I’ve recently discovered the “joys” of blogging (I am a late bloomer as far as computers go…never saw a PC till I completed my post-graduation!). So you could say I am discovering the world through this medium.
