Hello from Dubai airport – quite possibly the arse-end of the world – where many overfed businessmen have been spotted. Which leads me onto Ramesh Powar, India’s round offspinner; how good it was to see him hustle up to the wicket in the second one-dayer at Bristol. And it’s equally pleasing to read Mike Atherton has also made note of Powar’s waistline.
“When Chawla was removed from the attack 15 overs later – 15 overs bowled in tandem with the magnificently rotund off-spinner Romesh Powar – England were 214 for five and defeat was inevitable.”
So let’s start a campaign for the rotund cricketer to make his sizeable presence known. And list your favourite fatties below. I’ll start with the predictable, Mike Gatting – but I also have tremendous respect for WG Grace who, towards the end of his career, appeared to be pregnant with triplets.
Yours?

I think Dwayne Leverock, Big Merv and Inzamam would have to be up there. And don’t forget about Warwick “The Big Ship” Armstrong- he could probably captain the CAMRUC side.
definitely merv hughes…looked more at home nursing a beer at the local than a first class bowler!
mark cosgrove is doing pretty well too!
Boonie’s gotta be in there, mate! Maybe CAMRUC could join forces with CAMRA.
To pick a county player, Matt Walker of Kent. Fantastic batsman and, despite his size, an athletic fielder to boot.
I cant believe no one mentioned Rob Key
Or Ian Blackwell
What about Beefy? Or for a more hometown hero, Roger Twose (hero of the Auckland terraces).
Andy Moles / Ian Austin /
Merv Hughes and Boonie were my favorite rotundas. Endearing Ozzies both. Of course EAS Prasanna was also there before them.
Any one remember Russell AKA “Planet” Rowe, ex-captain of Wiltshire?
From Warwickshire in the 70′s John Jamieson , Geoff Humpage and of course Northants’ Ollie Milburn .
Anybody remembering Arjuna Ranatunga?
A ‘Who Ate all the Pies’ XI
Colin Milburn
Arjuna Ranatunga
Alan Ealham
Inzamam Ul Haq
Matt Walker
Mark Benson
Mike Gatting
Jock Edwards
Shane Warne
Ian Blackwell
Jimmy Ormond
…or Duleep Mendis for that matter?
On the subject of rotund cricketers – my team would include both David Boon and Godfrey Evans – nothing wrong with having some flesh on the bone, its a matter of being able to do the job when asked, and these two gents definately did.
Freddie was fond of a few pies on occasion…..although seems to make it to the gym these days.
Robin Smith was ‘cuddly’ but the King of the Calorie has to be Shane Warne
