Life after Benaud

By Ian 3 years ago, mid-June Add your comment below

On Desert Island Discs, you are allowed one luxury. Given mine would be a magical television that showed all available live cricket (as well as choice re-runs), I’d be able to pick my favourite pundits to describe the action. Who are my top commentators? In theory, I would only need two to cover the matches, but that would be unfair on them (I’m not a tyrant), so I’d hire five to mix it up and give the others a rest.

Richie Benaud in the comm box

Therefore, below are my five favourite commentators. Benaud would have been there, of course, as would Brian Johnston, but we must all move on. There are honourable mentions for Lloyd, Gower, Holding, Dujon, Nasser, Knight, Ward, Smith, Lawry and Greig, but these five pick themselves. My Top Five: Michael Atherton, Jimmy Adams, Michael Slater, Geoff Boycott and Simon Hughes.

I can’t imagine anyone will disagree, but then it’s your island. Pick who you like!

Slater? What’s going on! Personally my top 5 would be Boycott, Ian Chappell, Bill Lawry, Greig and Atherton. It is my opinion that Indian commentators (barring the hilarious Navjot Singh Sidhu) are the worst of the lot.

Perhaps a post about who are the worst in your opinion would be nice Ian.

Boycott, Athers, Benaud, Jimmy Adams & Simon Hughes – best

Lawry, Willis, Simon O’Donnell, Cozier, Viv Richards – worst

Nasser Hussain, Ian Healy (bat guitar notwithstanding), Atherton, Holding and Warne – the best in my book, with Simon Hughes just missing out.

I wasn’t old enough to have had the pleasure of listening to Johnston so I’ll just go with the ones that I am familiar with.

I’d have Henry Blofeld for the wordplay, Ian Chappel and Barry Richards for the technical talk, Ravi Shastri for an Asian perspective and Michael Holding or Geoffrey Boycott.

I think it’s important to differentiate between the guys who do the actual commentary, and the guys who introduce the show and do comment pieces afterwards.

In terms of commentators I’d want Atherton – he’s very dry and very insightful; CMJ – he’s the voice of creicket on the radio, and he’s enormously knowledgeable; Bumble – for the fun element he can’t be beaten, and cricket commentary should be fun; Gower as front man – surely he’s the heir apparent to Benaud; and Willis for the after play rant. Whilst Bob’s particular brand of whining, moaning, downright boring commentary should be consigned to the scrap heap, his post play monologues (normally decrying the state of the game), delivered straight to camera, are a work of genius. He just needs someone to wind him up, and off he goes. Particularly fun is when he gets on to the topic of bad light.

Oh, and I want Boycott too. Say what you like about him, but he really knows his stuff, and is seldom, if ever wrong. And he’s an opinionated sod too, which is all to the good.

How can you not have the smoothest man in the world!!
    Mark Nicholas…
My other four would be, Barry Richards, Michael Atherton, Richie Benaud, Geoffrey Boycott.

    That’s six, Bear… Tut tut.

If you’re having Boycs, then I’ll take Bumble too. His reaction yesterday to Michael Vaughan’s strides slipping down was priceless, especially with Jimmy Adams giggling in the background. Great TV. Besides, he IS 20-20 cricket.

Agree about Willis. He used to be just boring, but now he is angry and very good value.

From a completely different view ( ie. Aussie)-

    Jim Maxwell (ABC radio)
    Shane Warne
Kerry O’Keefe (ABC) driving Jonathon Agnew mad – they have to be on together
    Harsha Bhogle
Michael Holding ( on voice timbre alone!)

  • Pod wrote:

The best: Michael Artherton, David Lloyd, Michael Holding, Geoffery Boycott, Ravi Shastri

Narrowly missing out: Slater, Symcox, Greig, Harsha Bhogle

The worst: Ian Healy (the most partisan commentator), Sunil Gavaskar (and a load of other Indian commentators), Mark Nicholas

Mar Nicholas is what I call a fair-weather commentator – he always seems to be partisan (depending on which team is doing well)

I would take John Arlott and Brian Johnston as commentators, and Fred Trueman, Jim Laker and Richie Benaud as analysts/colour guys.

The voice of John Arlott was for years the personification of all that is great about cricket, to be followed by the irrepressible ‘Jonners’.

Fiery Fred, dour Jim and the incomparable Richie provided all there ever was to know about the game and tactics.

None of the current crop of talking heads could get close to these past masters!

Well said Mr Grant! Arlott, Jonners and Fred would be on my wish list too as well as Benaud, but as said, we must move on. How I wish the Beeb would archive some of their commentaries online!

I don’t have Sky at home but have enough recordings to understand your moans. Gower and Bumble would be in. Much as I love them, Sir Ian, Nasser and Bob have made too many blunders on the Laws to have my full confidence. And Athers would be in.

I would have liked to have heard commentary from Alec Stewart or the wonderful Mike Brierley, but I have not so cannot judge.

From TMS I’d take Aggers and Boycs, so that’s 5 to date.

I would love Blowers and Sidhu to do guest spots but as 6th man, I’m bowling you all a real beamer and am going for Mark Church who covers Surrey matches for the BBC.

I never get to see or hear Bob Willis’s rants, unfortunately.

I’ve gone off Boycs and Nicholas. Give me Atherton, Nasser and Bumble (first two playing straight man to the third who can be completely off the wall); from the Australian summer I rather liked Mark Taylor (who really looks like Anthony La Paglia these days — I was surprised no-one brought up the resemblance on the day when Taylor started going on about how much his wife loved Without a Trace); from the Windies tour I’ve come to enjoy the thoughtful Jimmy Adams.

For smooth frontman, I prefer Gower over Nicholas. And Botham, big man, big knight, big reputation, big car and all, does not rate. Though it was very funny after he got his gong and was being teased by Atherton et al about turning up in his secondhand Bentley, that he turned the tables by filming Atherton’s tatty scratched old stationwagon. I thought it was Nass with the reputation for being tight.

6 is a fairer number to pick – 3 pairs…TV: benaud and ian smith, tony grieg and bill lawrie, athers and bumble.
Goware should anchor, nicholas should do pitch analysis and post match.
    Radio: Aggers, O’keefe, CMJ, Bocys.

I dont get to watch much cricket on TV but enough to appreciate Athers. TMS are a mixed bag. Cant stand Boycott – not that he has nt got something interesting to say but he’s like a dog with a bone and has to have the last word. I really hope Im listening when we hear a clump as he hits the deck when Aggers patience finally gives out. Vic Marks and Mike Selvey are gems. Quite impressed with Sir Viv too. Heart sinks when Blowers and CMJ come on the air. Barry Richards would be my other choice.

“Barry Richards would be my other choice”

What? I’m afraid that you are simply wrong on that. Barry Richards is a bad commentator. I would say that he is nearly as bad and annoying as Jack Bannister used to be. Vic Marks and Mike Selvey have nothing patricularly interesting to add. You have managed topick the two most anodyne radio voices, along with the appallingly one-eyed Richards, and yet you dismiss CMJ – why? I can see why people don’t like Blowers, but CMJ is a very sound cricket writer, has enornmous knowledge of the game and as such is an superbly professional broadcaster.

  • AgainsTTheWall wrote:

Au contraire dear Bear. Marks, Selvey AND Richards are interesting. They initiate new topics to move the general discussion on and usually offer something more than platitudes. They can all offer some insight into the modern day thinking behind the game and contribute anecdotes from their playing days. Selvey especially has a terrific sense of humour and qualifies as a raconteur imho. Now if its platitudes and cliches you go for then I can well understand why you enjoy CMJ’s contributions. Although CMJ has played cricket all his life he strikes me as someone whose knowledge of the game is derived from some 1950s boys adventure book. Indeed I would judge CMJ as the Commentator Who Knows Least About The Game.

  • The Bear wrote:
    June 22nd, 2007 at 10.34 am

AgainsTTheWall – you are spot on. A chap who has been on the TMS team for over 30 years, played for Surrey 2nds, and has a son (with whom he opresumably communicates) who plays 1st class cricket is obviously someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. You’re obviously missing all this somehow – it couldn’t be that you have anything against CMJ’s public school accent could it? Surely not?

The fact is that although people obviously have their particular likes and dislikes, there are some commentators who are good, and some – like Bannister and Robin Jackman and Barry Richards – who are awful.
Someone posted earlier that they’d have liked to hear Alec Stewart commentate. Really, believe me, you’re better off not having heard him. Remember the platitudes he used to come out with when interviweed? Well now it’s just more of the same. Why do you think he’s not on TV / radio more often? It’s because his delivery is totally wooden, and he has very little of interest to say.

  • AgainsTTheWall wrote:

Bear I am aware of CMJ cricketing background and yes, I do find his accent slightly irritating (tho Im sure my own Lancastrian tones are far worse), but I just do not find him an engaging commentator. But not only is he dull, I cant stand the way he pussy-foots around foreigners sensibilities in that guilt-ridden way. I know they all do it to some extent – after all they are well-mannered Englishmen – but CMJ lays it on like only a white, middle-class liberal can. Crikey I can almost see him wringing his hands and genuflecting as he apologises for Pakistan or West Indies being crap.

Mark Church for BBC Radio London and Surrey Cricket Radio, with partner, archivist/statistician Trevor Jones. These two are unsung gems. Knowledgable, insightful, dry and funny to boot. They provide wonderful commenatry and they engage with listeners very well indeed via email and texts. A brilliant partnership.

The bloggers curse! Trevor Jones has disappeared from the airwaves and no one is saying a word! Even Kevin Hand and the Rampants’ blog have nary a word.

    1)Richie Benaud is the Pioneer.
    2)David Gower for his Vocabulary.
3)Ravi Shastri for his Forthright comments and analyses the game very well.
4)Harsha Bhogle is the most Knowledgeable in cricketing world.
5)David Bumble Lloyd for his humour.
6)Mark Nicholas as a smart presenter.
    7)Bill Lawry for his exuberance.

Hope many agree with my choices.

All I can say is that you in England don’t know what you’re missing out on.

Having grown up in Australia, spent some time in NZ and now living in the UK I can say the ABC radio team is the best – bar none. Some of the three way discussions between Aggers, O’Keefe and Bogle leave you needing a change of underwear. Its the only station that is as good to listen to during a rain interruption as when the game’s on – just to hear these boys go.

As for the TV front men – can’t go past Richie – may he live for ever! – and his clone – Nicholas (I’m sure he’ll inherrit the ‘off white’ when the Great Benaud retires).

Do yourselves a favour England – try tuning into ABC Grandstand next time Aus is playing England (pod cast maybe???) – you’ll be in for a treat!

    2. Richie Benaud( All time fav )
    3. Michael Slater
    4. Harsha Bhogle
    5. Mr. Boycott

I go back a long way, so these are my all-time favourites:
    John Arlott
    Brian Johnston
    Alan Gibson
    Jonathan Agnew
    Richie Benaud

The two I wouldn’t have are Geoff Boycott and Ian Botham. Neither had the slightest idea of strategy and tactics when they were captains and haven’t improved as commentators. The one I’d love to have, but have never heard, is Mike Brearley. He and Benaud were the best captains I ever saw.
