Alistair Cook… Led England well at U19. Real bright cricket brain, batted well when Captain too…
Who should be England’s new one-day captain?

I think we all saw this coming, and it’s a timely decision for England’s one-day team.
“Since our disappointing performances in the World Cup, I have been giving careful consideration as to what is the best way forward for the England one-day team and my own role within the side,” said Vaughan in an ECB statement. “I reached this decision some time ago, but I did not want to announce it until after the end of this Test series to avoid it becoming a distraction to the team.
“However, due to intense speculation in the media about my future, I feel it is important to make my intentions clear now. Our priority is to build a one-day squad able to compete strongly at the next World Cup, and I firmly believe that the interests of the team will be best served if I step down and allow another player to gain additional experience of captaincy in the one-day international arena.
But who should replace him? Paul Collingwood is favourite. Who is your choice?

Personally I think Vaughan could have been given one last chance. Perhaps it was more him than people forcing him that made him resign but I still believe he was on the brink of doing really well for England. Alas, nothing can be done that about that now (just watch and drool at those pull shots he played against WI (final match of 2007 WC) on youtube).
Now that he is gone, Collingwood is a good bet. Frankly I don’t think we have any other option. I can’t see Pietersen as captaincy material, Strauss is woefully out of form and may not be there, the others are too raw.
Will Hoggard be playing ODI cricket again? If so what was the reason for not playing in Australia and the world cup?
If he is going to play… there’s another captaincy candidate. Bowlers however are always overlooked!

Cooky would be too young atm, not enough International experience yet to be captain….
I hope as hell its not Pieterson and we all know Flintoff cant captain, that was pretty obvious down here last summer/winter…
Strauss isnt really garunteed a spot in the ODI team at the moment is he…
Dosnt really leave anyone other than Collingwood does it.
Will this could be a good poll question…
Another poit worth discussing would be Englands keeper for the ODIs. Does Prior steal the gloves from Nixon because of his form in the Test’s???

I think it’s a shame. And I suspect he was pushed, otherwise why would he be saying right up until a week ago that he was dead against the captaincy being split.
He still has a better record than practically every other captain for one-day wins, despite the poor average.
I don’t predict a lot of glory ahead for one-day England, despite this move. I’d love to see the list of big-hitting top order batsmen that Vaughan was keeping out of the side by his presence. Name them for me, someone! I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. The media love to end people’s careers for them — but they don’t always get the last laugh.

What exactly is ‘captaincy’ material? I don’t think people should be so anti-Pieterson with that argument. Neither him nor Collingwood (another good candidate, mind you) have any great experience of captaincy and for me neither is front of the other on that measure. Cook is no guarantee for the ODI side and so should be left for the moment.
The important thing is, how do we want the England ODI team to play? Like we have been in the last 15 years or the way the more successful teams of that era (Sri Lanka, Australia, others for very short periods) have played: Aggressively, spunkily, and unafraid to take a few risks early doors when batting (among other things). Well, while I’m not saying that Collingwood’s England wouldn’t have these qualities, does that not describe KP to a ‘T’? As neither have much experience its possibly going to take whichever of them a while to find their feet in that position anyway, so why not have a captain to mould the team ethic on? Although let Colly be the mould for the fielding, sure!

If I were a Pom and cared about it, I’d go for KP. He’s the only one who can give the England team the kick up the a….. they need to start going somewhere in ODI’s. He’s the one who talks about “ruthlessness” because he’s the only one who understands it’s not about sitting back in your comfort zone (or wanting to go home the moment you’re pushed out of it), IF you want to win. I f you just want to collect your salary, then choose nayone, it dones’nt really matter…
I don’t like KP much, because he’s such an egotist, but channel that into captaincy and in 4 years time he could be the best England’s had for along time.

Spot on, Rusty. KP will attack and while he insists on playing rash shots at the last ball of the day, he mostly hits them for four. Colly is astute and popular, but we need something more. We are so far off the mark in ODIs at the moment that it makes sense to give it to the only player who would make a World XI at the moment.
Also, and I may be wrong here, but has Vaughan retired from ODI cricket? I don’t think so. What chance that he is picked in the squad as an interim measure to help the next skipper bed in? As Kathy says, there isn’t really anyone else. In a recent interview Graveney said: a) Vaughan maybe gets another chance to build on 70 against Windies at WC; b) he isn’t building for the next WC just yet; and c) players like Jayasuriya, who won’t be at the next WC, still have something to add.
OK, Mickey isn’t half the player Sanath is, but there may be a hint there…

Matt Prior just keeps on getting better. I think he is going to be an essential player to England for a long time to come. He just needs to be given the opportunities, reminds me a bit of Adam Gilchrist.
I’ve found a competition to win a Fearnley bat signed by Matt Prior and other members of the Sussex club, its worth a look (http://www.miodestino.co.uk/boutique/page.php/competition.html ), if he keeps on going at this rate it’ll become a collectors item pretty soon!

Strauss strikes me as the only one with the appropriate personality and brains for the job. Shame about his batting of late tho.

I agree Strauss can captain the test side but not so sure about ODI. He doesn’t automatically make the side and we don’t want someone taking up a spot just for their captaincy do we? I was all for Colly and against KP, he’s egotistical and arrogant but the more I read on this the more I am coming round to the idea. ….we do need some pizzazz and get up and go in the ODI side and he certainly has that.
