Cricinfo acquired by ESPN

In case you didn’t know…

“Growing our business in the online world is vital for us to serve sports fans,” said Russell Wolff, managing director of ESPN International. “Cricinfo is a tremendous property with a great fan base and it will be a strong addition to ESPN.”

Explaining the decision, Mark Getty, director of the Wisden Group, said: “Cricinfo has developed into a significant cricket brand in its own right, combining huge global popularity with strong commercial success. ESPN is a major sports broadcaster and international rights holder and will provide the perfect environment for Cricinfo to further realise its enormous potential.”

More here and here.

Will – Glad the paycheck may come with a few additional benefits, (cheap trips to Orlando, free frites at Eurodisney??) but I am concerned that Cricinfo will now disappear into the mainstream media: And our beloved site (I was user #1789 back in the day), will become another unscrupulous grab for cash.

Still all change is good – right?

Does this mean no more Almanack content on Cricinfo?

So this means that Wisden have disposed of both The Wisden Cricketer (to Sky Publishing) and Cricinfo in the last quarter? Streamlining ahoy.

Given as Cricinfo and TWC are now owned by rival broadcasters, I take it that’s the end of shared content between the two? What happens to people like yourself who produce content for both?

I think I’ll be heading for Spin when my TWC sub expires; I’m simply not forking over money to Murdoch’s lot, particularly after they nicked the home test matches. It’s also excessively obsessed with England test players, as highlighted by the decision to put Steve Harmison on the front cover in the month Bob Woolmer died.

As for Cricinfo, I’ll just have to adopt a wait-and-see policy. You’re still the best site for ball-by-ball updates, although I’ll turn to the BBC/Guardian for humour and analysis.

A little late in replying to this (16 months).

Alex, the TWC was unfortunate, but they cannot be blamed. It happens to all magazines, every month, and especially in news and sport. Once an issue has gone to press, or is 24 hours from going, it cannot be pulled. It makes them look daft at times, but magazines are not immediate publications. The public’s thirst for the instantaneous (the internet) can make some attacks on the apparent blinked decisions made by magazines (like your example above) a little unfair given their limitations and time restrictions.

Anyway. We’ve been under ESPN’s gaze for a year now and, as far as I’m concerned, there has been no editorial change. What do you all think?
