    Harmison hype

By Will last year, at the start of June Leave a comment on this post

There’s too much hype about Harmison. At test level, he’s a really average bowler.

Read in this week’s Time Out London in their brilliant column, Overhead underground (from themanwhofellasleep.com).

Great site! But it’s a fair commentfrom the typical English sport of knocking Test players at every opportunity, most successfully played by members of the media.

I like the comment from 19th April :)

“Cricketers are sexy, but only when they wear whites. I can’t be doing with all the colours.”

Yeah, I’m with them on the whites.

Harmison is thoroughly average. Every now and again he takes a bunch of wickets/puts the wind up the oppo, but more often than not he bowls within himself, fails to take advantage of his natural abilities, and generally flatters to deceive. I’m a bit fed up of him, and I’m more fed up of all his mates in Tean England settling for the line “Harmy just needs to get his confidence back, and those wickets he got in the second innings will do just that - I’m sure he’ll come good at Lords/Headingly/Old Trafford/Durham (delete as appropriate as we progess through the summer)”

I’m sorry but knocking over a few hapless Windies tailenders doesn’t mean he’s back on form. Send him back to Durham and make him earn his place. At the moment he seems to treat the job as a sinecure.

I am glad some of you English are starting to realize that.

And his hype is based on, what, two years during which he actually managed to bowl fast and straight? Christ, if McGrath had been English…
