By Will 3 years ago, mid-May Add your comment below

The third day from Lord’s. England are storming through this Test. Overnight declaration or will they bat for 20 minutes just to grind West Indies further into da mire?

If it was Australia I would def bat for another 20 minutes just to wind them up but I almost feel sorry for the Windies. Their display so far has been lacklustre to say the least. I think England should just come out and bowl them for under 200 enforce the follow on and wrap it up. They don’t look like they can or want to put up much of a fight at the moment…..

That is, if England CAN bowl them out.. the batsman have done awfully well, but for all we know Harmison could come out with another Harmy directed to second slip, and we could lose the game in an hour. England have a knack of throwing away the best starts.

that is very true…… England’s bowling does worry me but things may tentatively be looking up for us. This mornings session will be crucial,if we start well I reckon we can carry on. Fingers crossed anyway.

We should declare, we’ve only got three days to take twenty wickets with four front line bowlers. We can’t lose from this position, and if the West Indies are eight down in their second innings on the last day Strauss will get crucified.

There is no need to bat this morning but it’s looking like they might at the moment? Let’s just go for a win, not mess about with mind games. We don’t really need any more runs this morning are you are right re time. If it runs out……..

Hoggard’s off injured. This isn’t good.

Bless Monty :) got one with his first ball!

Re: Hoggard’s injury – that is why we need five bowlers. England’s success over the last four years has been built around Flintoff, because he can bat at 6, and bowl like one of the best in the world.

On another thread, people have been saying Flinfoff is finished as a bat, and should come in at 8. While his WC batting performances were woeful, he is still a class act. You don’t lose form permanently. He just needs a rest, the chance to get his passion for the game back, tweak his technique, and he’ll be scoring centuries in a session. He would be wasted at 8. He is still one of the few players in the world who can turn a game in an hour.

And Monty’s just got his fourth wicket- what the Windies wouldn’t give for a spinner of their own now!

what did England do before Monty? They talk about folk hero but he has the makings of a legend one day…

Having just read the ball-by-ball on CricInfo, I have two things to add. 1) Anyone who says “ta, love” should never be taken seriously, under ANY circumstances. 2) Channel 9 Australia (you know,Kerry Packer’s channel) had Hot Spot before Sky, so give credit where credit’s due, why don’t you? :)

Giles was a bit of a legend, wasn’t he England11?

Monty’s certainly turned things around, but I’m still worried.. what with Hoggy and his injury; and England’s love of throwing away a good start – but then again, God seems to smile down on Andrew Strauss as Test skipper.

Though if anyone knows, why is Eoin Morgan the 12th man?

The sooner Allan Donald joins the coaching team, the better.

The only thing I can think of is that like Gavin Hamilton who played for England straight after representing Scotland in the World Cup, Eoin Morgan is already qualified.

If he isn’t then the matter should be investigated and the ECB fined for fielding an ineligible player (maybe this could be cricket’s version of the Tevez saga?).

I have to say it would be unfortunate if Morgan also has his sights set on playing for England. After the World Cup I thought that Ireland had a chance to become a bit like Zimbabwe used to be.

Never going to be the best team in the world, but a solid group of players who could give bigger test playing nations a run for their money. They already had Ed Joyce as their own equivalent to Graeme Hick!

However if the whole damn team decides to qualify for England then the world cup would have been a flash in the pan.

Nice to see the Windies lower middle order fight back with such determination. I was worried that they might just fold up their tents.

Anybody can field as a substitute fielder – as opposed to being left out of the team as a 12th man. Quite often someone from the opposing side will field for you in a club match and various people have been pulled out of the crowd or support staff to do so in first class cricket. There’s no issue of divided loyalty here. There’s nothing in the rules to prevent Dwayne Bravo fielding for England as a sub, never mind Morgan.

I agree with Steven, it’s nice to see they weren’t just dreaming of being back on tropical isles although with the exception of Monty, I am a bit unimpressed in the England attack. It’s a shame as we seem to say that a lot these days. I felt so positive yesterday morning and even though we’re still well on top, I can’t help but feel disappointed.

Is anyone else losing all patience with Harmison? He’s in danger of becoming the bowling equivalent of Ramprakash, only surly and far less personable. Anyone know if he can dance?

Mahmood and Plunkett are both inconsistent, but at least they seem to have the right mental attitude. Did anyone read the Wisden Cricketer’s recent interview with Harmison? Clearly, he’s directing his hostility at journalists these days rather than opening batsmen. Earlier this week he was saying he had “Nothing to prove”, presumably apart from the ability to hit the cut bit. He’s beginning to smell irredeemable.

With Flintoff, Hoggy, Lewis and Broad all presumably injured for the next test, I’be tempted to give Harmison a nice long break as well, and call up Mahmood and Onions for the next test. Get someone with some hunger into the attack.

The ECB should run a new scheme called “Chance To (Punch Kevin) Shine”; the take-up would be enormous.

    Roll on Alan Donald.

With Hoggard and Flintoff out injured the selectors won’t drop their only other experienced seamer even if they want to. Had the others been fit Harmison would be in trouble. He’s got all the physical attributes but doesn’t have the mental strength I’m afraid. I would hope Onions gets the nod ahead of Mahmood but they’ll probably opt for Anderson anyway.

  • England11 wrote:

Totally agree. Harmison has definitely lost something and I am running out of patience with his bowling in the same way I am with Freddie’s batting. I know they can do it but they aren’t and have had plenty of chances. I think we should start looking the future and having faith with the Broads and Onions of this world, give them a run out with England. Just a thought….

Apparently not you, which makes me wonder why you take the time to visit a cricket blog and ask us if we carein the first place.

Because it’s always amusing to watch you Poms trying to manufacture silk purses from sows ears.
really, you’d struggle to call your version of the game real cricket – but I bet you’d give those Zimbabweans a run for their money. Well, maybe Namibia.
    Perhaps not.
