    England v West Indies, 1st Test, Lord’s, 2nd day

By Will last year, mid-May Leave a comment on this post

England, your task today is simple. Rack up at least 450, then bowl West Indies out for under 200. Weather is set fair so we should be in for a full day’s play. West Indies were quite dreadful yesterday, their bowlers lacking discipline and form. England just cruised along…

If the West-Indies could hold their catches then England would be in all sorts….

It will be interesting to see how long they can keep the presure on…

Hi there Elliott - just us keen Aussies here watching tonight hey? Long time before we see the Aussies in action again…

Friday night, a nice glass of plonk, and a lovely day at Lords… it’s all good, isn’t it?

I’m mildly impressed by the West Indies here.. good effort and application this morning, but oh no about the fielding!

    Lunch and it’s 280 for 4.

Pretty slow I would’ve thought, but I only caught the last 1/2 hour. It makes you appreciate just how much the Aussies have pushed Test cricket when you see a session like that.

Hi all, I’m stuck in the office with a pot of coffee. In the tea break, I will have to do the mad dash home. Then I can join you in aglass of wine :)

Oh no, Blowers put the kiss of death on Collingwood :(

What were the Windies selectors thinking? You should never go anywhere without a specialist spinner.

I would think if you don’t have a good Test spinner, you don’t take him to England in May.

It’s all very well to say you have to play a specialist spinner if you have a Warne or a Panesar available. In practice, you play your four best bowlers.

and Prior gets his ton on debut - the first English wicketkeeper to achieve this! Excellent! Well done. Now Bell just needs 3 more … come on, Bell!

Amid the jubilation about England’s good showing with the bat we must keep in mind that the Windies still have 20 wickets in hand. Even short of English conditions in May practice, even minus Lord Lara, I don’t expect them to be easy to get rid of twice if England must bat again.

I think England should bat on aiming for upwards of 700 with some aggressive big hitting tomorrow morning, then look to have about 2 1/2 days to bowl out a (hopefully) demoralized team twice for an innings victory.

In a way, we thought it might come down to this, but I still feel for the WIndies who have been launched into this Test tour terrifically under-prepared and in a state of confusion. It is great to see England firing well. Hurrah to Cook, Collingwood, Bell and Prior. Notice how well we play when there is no Aussie nearby?

However, I somehow cannot seem to find the gut-level Schadenfreude to enjoy it at the expense of the WIndies.

Does anyone else feel this way?

    [nods to Wraye]

Windies are as undercooked going into T1 as England was at the start of the Ashes tour. It’s criminal how either board can allow this. I agree it’s great to see England firing so well, but the Windies are clearly not yet ready to play a test series. It may be T3 before they are properly in gear.

I’m not advocating a return to the all-encompassing tour schedules of yesteryear, but there must be a proper ramp up time of a few one day games to get acclimatized, and at least a couple of 4 day games vs county sides + a final tune-up 4 day vs England “A” to get a touring side ready to go. Otherwise — unless the tourists are the 1948 Invincibles — this kind of hammering is on the cards.

If you never play the spinner, then how do you know whether he’s Test-class or not? Dave Mohammed’s gone off to a decent start, and even if he isn’t a Warne or Panesar, at least he’d offer something different than Taylor/Powell/Bravo/Collymore. In fact, Windies aren’t playing their four best bowlers, they’re playing their three best plus an allrounder plus Gayle.

Are we all correct in our sneaking suspicion that Matt Prior, despite a sterling display, is - how can i put this? - something of a twat? I see it as God’s perverse way of answering the prayers of the English cricket fan: “you said you wanted high achievers, didn’t you? You said you were sick of charming stylists, David Gowers and Mike Athertons, didn’t you? So what more could you want than Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior?”

    I suppose we’ll have to take what we’re given…

Ah Mr Davies, that’s the game these days. Pennies in the bank and runs on the board and if a player burns out, never mind. There are plenty more in the waiting line. Sigh. BTW, thanks Steven, good to hear I’m not the only one feeling this way.

All the teams have been on the go, non-stop, for God knows how many months. England took a real drubbing Down Under, now they seem keen to give one back. Come on, all you Aussies and call me a whingeing Pom ;) but I just can’t seem to find any joy in it right now.

Quick aside - Germany has just been voted into the new Div. 5 World Cup qualifiers. Hurrah! The minnows are coming! :)

I thought Prior came off very well from his interview yesterday. Any assumptions I’d made about his character were pretty much blown away.

Will Davies — in what way is Prior twattish? I don’t know him at all. Is it a different way of being twattish than say, the Paul Nixon way? Personally I’m rather fond of Nixon.

I lean towards the charming stylists myself. Though they don’t have to be public school, in fact a working class charming stylist can be the charmingest of the lot. But they do tend to get murdered by the press, and, as you say, the fans.
