I can’t believe it’s come to this. South Africa were the No. 1 ranked team in the world a fortnight ago, mixing brilliance and audacity with complacency and bottling. England really could make the last four, like it or lump it. Do they deserve to be there? Do they heck. But it would shake things up and give them genuine belief they can make the final.

With Pietersen facing the country of his birth, today’s match ought to be a real firecracker. Check the scorecard and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Go the Saffers! They have far more to lose than dozy England. I expect a top performance from them, even if that means Australia have to face them in the semis - at least that game will be worth watching. I hope. Can’t rely on anyone these days to give us a good game. Except the Kiwis.

I’m looking forward to this. I’m hoping England bowl, Pietersen will get riled, and it will be a belter of a game.

Frankly though, I don’t think that either team really deserves to get through. I would probably like the results to pan out tha the Windies to go through for the sake of the game there.

I’m exhausted after my ICC Cockup Council essay the other day (cheers for the link Luke - above), so all I can do today are 5 proposals to improve cricket:

1 - Move the ICC out of Dubai to a shed behing the Bat and Ball pub in Hambledon.
2 - Restrict the ICC to 4 employees and Geoffrey Boycott to manage them.
3 - Ban grand plans on pain of exile to St Helena. This may be whistling in the wind in cricket.
4 - Legislate that for environmental reasons International Teams may only travel by ship.
5 - For fun, make Shane Warne the Director of the Spirit of Cricket initiative.

I’m not sure it was a brilliant performance from South Africa, rather a bitterly insipid display from England.

They were given another chance, and had they won, they were almost a certainty to romp into the semis. A backbone needs to be formed in the English side that can stand up in the big games, and win them.
