I wrote a long reply to Atherton’s piece that you quote from, but for some reason the Telegraph haven’t shown it, even though I have asked them why. Maybe one is not allowed to criticise St Mike. And usually I think he writes really well, but I have no idea what he’s talking about in this piece. What does he mean by blind faith? Because they’re still talking positively? What does he expect them to say — we’re hopeless and we may as well not play the remaining games? England know they have underperformed so far and they’ve all said so. I don’t see how they’re preparing that much differently to anyone else. Why haven’t they played very well? It’s a mystery — if the answer to that question was something that you could bottle and sell, you’d make a billion. But I have no idea what he means by blind faith. If they play well against South Africa, they deserve to be in the semis. IF they don’t, they don’t, end of story. Sometimes even the best of cricket writers end up writing themselves up their own arses.
Atherton on England’s “blind faith”

Another supreme piece from Athers in today’s Sunday Telegraph:
England can beat South Africa and the West Indies, but it would be almost a miscarriage of justice if they found themselves in the semi-finals. And in terms of learning lessons for the future, it might not do English cricket much good at all to know that you can turn up relying on hope and blind faith and still go all the way

Could not agree more, Kathy. I looked for your rant, but couldn’t find it either . . .
Why he thinks that not making the semis is an “early exit” I do not know. Surely to be ranked 7th, one would expect a team to make the super 8s but not the semis . . . as may well happen. Wally!

Was going to say, nice pic of Vaughan, though . . .
. . . but there also appears to be part of my last comment that is not mine. Honest, I don’t normally write, “you may click on your name and/or comment to edit”. Will? I think this is the tip: don’t click on the preview button, then, exasperated with waiting, just submit comment anyway, before the preview comes up.

Oh ha ha Will. Honest, it’s not me doing this.

No idea what you’re doing Caroline. You’ve broken it. The site will be sent to the junkyard, and I’ll have to pay for it to be towed
What browser are you using? If it’s not Firefox, get firefox!

My big rant at the bottom of Atherton’s article has finally appeared, along with a lot of others. Read it and weep!

It is Firefox - it’s my husband’s little one-man war against Microsoft . . . You’d better send me the bill for the towing!
But those comments have gone now. Did you get rid of them Will?

Well, im English but i have lived in South Africa most of my life. I love my Birth country & am more loyal to England as a supporter than SA. However can you believe how the world cup cricket went for England? What happened to pride to play for your country? what happened to self belief & a captain that leads by example not defensive play all the time trying to fool everyone that he was positive & attacking when really he was negative in his mindset, which filtered through to all the other players.England needs to wake up & realize that they have all they need to succeed in cricket but all the experience in the world wont help you if you are negative & dont believe you can do it.
A change of mindset & a leaf out of the Proteas book i s a good example. Where is Bob Woolmer, he is sadly missed, someone who had passion for cricket!
