New Zealand v Sri Lanka, Super Eights, Grenada

By Scott last year, mid-April Leave a comment on this post

This could be the match of the tournament so far, at least in terms of form, although Australia vs South Africa was right up there as well. That old war-horse Chaminda Vaas has a couple of wickets already and in the 6th over, New Zealand are 4 for 2.

    Scorecard

Oh dear. They’re now four down…

Well, that just goes to show how wrong I can be. Thought highly of the Kiwis chances without Malinga the Slinger in the SL squad. Oh dear.

McCallum extremely unlucky there. I think everyone (including me) thought the bloody umpire gave him caught bat-pad. Turns out to be LBW. I can’t tell which call is worse.

Didn’t Scott Styris score a hundred like this in World Cup 2003? No one else batted around him yet he scored something like 140 out of some low number.

    Going to have a look.

My God. Eerie. It was against Sri Lanka.

    Scorecard

Chasing 273, New Zealand were bundled out for 225. Styris scored 141 of those runs himself.

This boy has a terrific half century conversion rate to boot. With this hundred he now has six 100’s and six 50’s.

    Really, really well played mate.

Crap, I read his Test conversion rate. :P It’s 4 tons and 18 fifties.

Ah well, Sri Lanka bat pretty far down - Murali’s not half bad with a bat these days! I’m a bit surprised Shane Bond’s not got a wicket, though his economy rate’s pretty decent.

I just have to write this post. It brings up my hundred!

NZ and SL were my second favourite groups and in the end I plumped for NZ to win. Game now over and the Lankans have completely outplayed the Kiwis. This means (hidden agenda) that the Lankans in my team are gonna have a party tomorrow night at our local team meeting. Hoowee!

See. They do it again. They trip before the end. Story’s not over yet. Makes England’s just-about score against the Sri Lankans look a little less shabby.

I am viewing this site for the first time and as an ex-cricketer any info on the current World Cup has to be interesting.
So keep up the good work thanks for your effort. Cheers David

    Kathy - fully agree,

the NZ boys put up a poor performace and it just goes to show people just how close the england boys pushed the SL lads, and its not just england who put in poor performances.

PLUS we had to face the FULL bowling squad of SL, so i go away happy knowing that we are not really as bad as everyone makes out…. well not all the time anyway LOL.

NZ have thier work cut out now… soft ride over

Why all this pundits are worried about Sri lanka resting two of their major bowlers. That’s purely a team decision and may be some sort of a tactic. Let the Sri Lankan team to play the way they want to play. If you think that the crowd was not attracted because of this, first you blame the tournament organizers and then the ICC. Not the teams. They have all the right to play in their own way.

Because, Naresh, people paid a LOT of money to see the teams play, and those people deserved to see Sri Lanka give a 100% effort. They didn’t, and they got spanked, and they deserved to get spanked too.
