Wake me up for the semi-finals!

By Scott last year, at the start of April Leave a comment on this post

Between being peeved, along the lines that Will has laid out below, and the sheer monotony, I have lost interest. Unless something amazing happens, I won’t be turning on the telly until Australia play England on Sunday night.

Well, tonight Ireland play South Africa, and if Ireland actually get close, you might want to comment here. Fulminate away.

There is no doubt this WC has hit the last nail in the coffin of the ODI World Cup. I think the 20-20 WC will become the standard bearer for Cricket World Cup in the future. This form is too long, a short 2-3 week 20-20 cup is the best compromise.

In future, how about just the top eight in the world ODI rankings contesting the World Cup - everyone plays each other once, then the top two contest the final (this to be one match only, defo not best of three as in the CB series).
Admittedly, this might cause a few problems - say if England were down to host it but unable to qualify due to being ranked 9th or something - but that wouldn’t be the end of the world…

I’ve actually enjoyed seeing the struggling test-status teams playing the minnows in the first round, so don’t do away with that - it broadens the game for those nations. But whatever happened to having quarter-finals (1A vs 2B; 2A vs 1B . . . etc). Then we reduce eight teams to four in four matches, not four weeks! Don’t other sports’ World Cups follow this format? Giving Australia so long to play themselves into form is just suicide! Let’s keep the short, sharp shocks going all the way through to the final.

It might also help if the ICC were to do away with other ODI tournaments such as the Champions Trophy…

Or maybe the ICC could reduce the number of ODI tournaments on the calender by getting rid of the Champions Trophy (what’s the point of having that in the same season as the World Cup anyway?).

. . . or how about this for an idea: the ICC do away with the Champions Trophy . . .

(sorry Nick, couldn’t resist that one!)

Maybe the Champions trophy format should be used for the World Cup. That tournament took 2-3 weeks. That seems like the right duration.

Do away with the Champions Trophy, perfect idea Caroline.

Comon guys. Focus on the positive here. There are a million ways to examine the shortcomings of this World Cup. But for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. There are a million ways to enjoy it as well.

Watching Niall O’Brien charge Langeveldt and spank him over covers for four just now makes me realize just how much I am enjoying this. Ireland is no doubt a huge success story. They are giving it their all.

South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia are playing with menace and it’s really difficult to separate them. I would say the top 4 above are closer than any previous World Cup that I can think of.

You know what you’re doing Scott? Your playing right into the hands of those who actually believe the World Cup *needs* India and Pakistan to thrive.

And Ireland gets a wicket in the first over. Comon, who doesn’t enjoy this?
